Our loving dad, grandpa, and friend passed away peacefully on January 25th, 2017. John was born October 25th 1932 to Elmer John Thomas (Red) and Florence Mabel Lords (Keppie) in McCammon, Idaho. He was an only child. John attended Pocatello High School and there learned he had tremendous talent for playing the trombone. He was placed first chair in the Concert/Marching Band, Symphony Orchestra and in the Pep Band.
After graduating high school, he enlisted in the Navy where he served on the USS Bonita in Pearl Harbor as a qualified submariner and earned his silver dolphins. Following his Navy years, John began his career at Hercules Aerospace (aka the Rocket Ranch) where he enjoyed and excelled for 31 years before retiring.
On December 29. 1967 he met the true love of his life, Louise Parry, at the NCO club at Fort Douglas. Louise had 4 boys from 2 previous marriages and they all became a family on Memorial Day, May 30th 1968 when they were married. Later he adopted those 4 boys. John and Louise were truly soul mates and loved each other very much.
He loved playing golf and even got a Hole in One! He also enjoyed writing and public speaking. John was a master communicator, a member of the Elks Lodge, a Designated Toastmaster, and always the life of every party. John spent his last two years at Cottonwood Creek Assisted Living where he served on the resident council, volunteered to give several speeches and met good friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Louise, and son, William Richard Thomas. He is survived by his sons: Kirk Chauncey Thomas (Karey), Christopher Howard Thomas (Michelle), Marten Gerald Thomas (Natalie), Barry LaDuke (Jean), from a previous marriage, a beautiful daughter-in-law, Tawna Thomas, and family friend, Lee Skyles; fifteen grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
John will be honored at memorial services held on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Mountain View Memorial Estates Mortuary Chapel, 3115 East 7800 South, Cottonwood Heights, Utah. Visitations will be held Wednesday, February 1st from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. both at the mortuary. Interment will follow in the Mountain View Memorial Estates Cemetery.
