IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joyce Barrett
Talbot
July 13, 1932 – August 14, 2012
St. George, Utah - Joyce Barrett Talbot passed away peacefully on August 14, 2012 in St. George, Utah at the age of 80. By her side was her devoted husband of 12 years, Elden Verl Talbot, who cared for her as she fought cancer during the past ten months.
Joyce was born on July 13, 1932, in Menan, Idaho, the twelfth of thirteen children born to Clarence and Mary Spendlove Scott. She lived a life rich in friends, love and experiences. She drew her strength from her faith in Jesus Christ and her devotion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She found her calling in helping others and gave generously of her time and talents to many organizations. Joyce was a champion of the ill and less fortunate and worked countless hours in the Salvation Army, Doctors without Borders, as a Hospice volunteer and for other organizations that benefit children and veterans. She served as an officer in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and many leadership positions in Primary and Relief Society. She was the Compassionate Service Leader for several years up until her illness. She served a mission for the LDS church in San Jose, California.
Joyce lived in many places during her lifetime. She was married to Jack Donald Barrett in 1953 (later divorced) and resided in Arcadia, California where they raised five children. She was honored as the California Young Mother of the Year in 1968. She received her nursing degree from Pasadena City College and worked as a neurological nurse for many years. She later moved to Boise, Idaho, and held many nursing positions there including St. Alphonsus Hospital and Shriner's Rehabilitation. She later moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, and worked at LDS Hospital and St. Marks Hospital. She was instrumental in initiating the patient admissions program at Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, Utah. She was married to Lionel Olsen for 5 years prior to his death. In 2000 Joyce married Elden Talbot and together they traveled the world, including serving a second mission in Brisbane, Australia.
Joyce had many talents and a variety of interests. She enjoyed creating beautiful quilts and other types of sewing. She was a great cook and loved entertaining friends and family. She also enjoyed exercising, traveling, planting flowers and decorating. She was optimistic and uncomplaining about the adversity in her own life.
She is survived by her husband, Elden Talbot of St. George, Utah; her children: Michael Barrett (Roseville, California), Kimberly Forsythe (Salt Lake City, Utah), Peggy Eisenberg (Honolulu, Hawaii), Leilani Harris (Scottsdale, Arizona), Matthew Barrett (Glendale, Arizona); ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the loving care provided Collette, RN of IHC Home Health & Hospice. The family would also like to recognize the Talbot family, especially Joe and Lori Smolka and Steve Talbot for their love and care of Joyce and their support of Elden.
