St. George, UT- Lane Birch was born August 28, 1954 and left this life on June 4, 2012. He was the son of Helen Harrison Birch and Eldon Birch from St. Anthony, ID, where he was raised. He faithfully served an LDS mission in Germany, followed by earning an undergraduate degree at Boise State University. He later received an MBA from University of California, Berkeley and met his wife in the Bay Area. He was married and sealed to Joy Finlayson in the Salt Lake City Temple on April 30, 1981. Lane started his professional career in Portland, Oregon, working for public utilities. His employment led him to Salt Lake City and later on to Indiana. He spent 20 years in the public utility sector, both as a direct employee and as a self-employed consultant. The love of mountains and the outdoors led him back to the west where he and his wife settled in St. George, UT. He loved finding new trails to explore in the surrounding areas of Southern Utah. In addition to his professional career, he served in many leadership positions in the LDS Church, selflessly giving his time to touch the lives of numerous people across the country. Lane was, however, first and foremost a dedicated family man. His free hours were always spent with his beloved wife supporting his three sons through countless football games, wrestling matches, honors programs and school events. His infectious laugh and quirky sense of humor will be remembered by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife, Joy, and three wonderful sons whom he loved and was proud of: Justin Birch (Ellie), New York City; Jordan Birch, Indianapolis; and Colton Birch, Provo; as well as his brother Scott Birch (Carrie) of Boise, ID. He is preceded in death by his mother and father. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at 11:00 a.m., at the Snow Canyon LDS 11th Ward Chapel, 1625 N. Lava Flow Drive, Santa Clara, UT. Visitations will take place on Friday, June 8th at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Boulevard, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. prior to services at the Snow Canyon Chapel. Interment will follow services at the Tonaquint Cemetery under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary, 435-673-4221. The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, you enjoy a dinner out with your family. Take time with your family because that is what Lane would want.
