Obituary

Santa Clara, UT - Lawrence Hall Bray, 81, passed away September 19, 2014 in St. George, Utah. He was born May 9, 1933 in Lakeshore, Utah to Vern and Myrl Bray. He married Marva Reveau Brady in Manti, Utah on November 23, 1955. Lawrence was raised in an LDS home in Lakeshore, Utah. He joined the Marine Corps in Provo, Utah and served 14 months overseas in Japan and Korea. In Japan he made meritorious corporal and then sergeant just before he got married in November of 1955. He was honorably discharged in San Francisco on July 30, 1956. Lawrence graduated from BYU and moved to Thomas, Idaho to teach, coach and drive a school bus at Snake River High School. He later moved his family to Las Vegas, Nevada to work for the Clark County School District. During that time he taught English and Social Studies and coached tennis in high school. During his time in Las Vegas he served on the High Council, as a bishop and as a member of the Stake Presidency for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After he retired from CCSD he spent time teaching English at Beijing University in China until his wife's terminal illness brought him back to Las Vegas and her death shortly following his return. After Marva's death Lawrence married Shirlee Graf Duncan in Las Vegas in January 1997 and they moved to Santa Clara, Utah. Here he enjoyed working for hospice, caring for his garden, teaching Gospel Doctrine, singing in the choir, and supporting grandchildren's extra-curricular activities. Lawrence and Shirlee taught English in China, served as Ordinance Workers in the St. George LDS Temple, and served missions in Loas and South Africa. After Shirlee's death he married Nancy Larsen in July 27, 2013. They remained in Santa Clara while he worked on the stake church farm. He is survived by his wife: Nancy Bray; children: Mary Schumacher (Eddy), Marc Bray, Stephanie Bray, and Ruth Bray, Darrin Duncan (Amalia), Corey Duncan (Emily), Catherine Smelser, Kenneth Larsen (Layna), Doris Guyier (Bob), Daniel Larsen (Gudrun). Grandchildren: Anna Schumacher, Ellen Bingham, Jesse Schumacher, Daniel Schumacher, Tara Schumacher, Hudson Duncan, Braxton Duncan, Baylee Duncan, Dallen Duncan, Cayden Duncan, Ryan Duncan, Abby Duncan, Melanie (Smelser) Collins, Angela Smelser, Natalie (Smelser) Bayne, Matthew Smelser, Shauna (Larsen) Iverson, Nicholas Larsen, Blake Larsen, Dominik Larsen, and Martin Pfferkorn. Siblings: Carolyn Holt (Paul), Robert Bray (Maryann), Janet Sheridan (Joel), Barbara Browning, Blaine (Vickie), and J.L. (Janice). Preceded in death by his parents, brother: Alan Bray; wife: Marva Bray, children: Judy Lee Bray, Daniel Alan Bray, Beth Ann Bray, stillborn girl; and wife: Shirlee Bray. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at 1:00 p.m at the Santa Clara LDS Stake Center, 3040 West Santa Clara Drive, Santa Clara, Utah. Visitations will be held Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd. and on Wednesday, prior to services, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Stake Center. Interment will be held Thursday, September 25, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the Fairview City Cemetery, Fairview, Utah. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
