Obituary

St. George, Utah - Lavoid Sidney Leavitt, 91, passed away January 19, 2011 in St. George, Utah. He was born September 16, 1919 to James Sidney and Inez Knight Leavitt in the old McGregor Hospital. He married Harriet Anna Anderson on June 14, 1942 in Reno, Nevada and they were sealed two weeks later in the St. George LDS Temple. He lived his early years in Southern Utah, Southern Nevada and Arizona where he learned to love the desert and early pioneer history, which led to his interest in exploring many of the early trails. After graduation from Bunkerville High School, he attended Dixie College where he was involved in football and dramatic arts. It was there that he met Harriet. After graduation, he joined the Army and soon was married. During the war he fought in the Pacific. Following the war, he worked as a Civil Servant at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hawthorne, Nevada. He was very involved in church and family. He was instrumental in starting the first Sunday School for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hawthorne. He served in many church assignments, including Scout Master, Bishopric and High Council where his primary assignment was to the single adults. Following retirement in 1973, Lavoid and Harriet returned to Southern Utah. They were called to served a full time mission in Deming, New Mexico. For about 30 years he was involved in the Institute of Continued Learning (Dixie College). In 1983, he became its president. He was active in Huntsman Senior Games and Utah Summer Games, winning many Gold Medals in bicycle events. He also loved flying model airplanes. In their later years, Lavoid and Harriet moved to The Meadows where they both loved to serve in the church especially his Sunday School and Priesthood teaching assignments. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. He is survived by his children: Deslie (Roger) Handy, Louise (Chris) Engstrom, and Dale (Celeste) Leavitt; 24 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Harriet; his son, Jim (Jennifer) Leavitt; and granddaughter, Susan Engstrom. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah. Visitation will be held Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Mortuary, prior to services. Interment will be at the Tonaquint Cemetery.
