Obituary

Leroy "John" Gallenstein, age 95, of Sun River, UT and Paso Robles, CA, died peacefully in St. George, UT on January 9, 2026.

He was born in Cincinnati, OH in 1930 to parents Louis and Rosina Gallenstein. He sailed the world with the Merchant Marines from 1948 to 1951. In mid-1951, he settled in Southern California and began working in the aerospace industry while also attending classes at Loyola Marymount University. He graduated LMU in 1953 and continued working for North American Aviation. John then re-enlisted and served in the Air Force from 1958 to 1960, reaching the distinction of Captain.

Following his military career, John worked as a wage analysist for multiple aerospace companies in Southern California until 1972. He returned to school and attended San Fernando Valley College of Law, graduating with a J.D. in May 1975. Yet again, he returned to the aerospace industry until his retirement. John's hobbies included gardening and home building.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Helen Gallenstein; his children: Teri Gallenstein, Mike Gallenstein, Chris Gallenstein, Lisa Eskanos, and Kerri Lindgren; plus 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son, Gregory Gallenstein.

John will be buried at Miramar National Cemetery, San Diego, CA, with military honors.
