IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Liselotte "Lilo"
Haertl Schiel
February 28, 1924 – December 10, 2023
St George Utah - Liselotte Haertl Schiel, beloved wife, stepmother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend passed away December 10, 2023, in St. George, Utah, at age 99. The first of three children, Lilo as she was called, was born in Munich, Germany on February 28, 1924, to Gregor Haertl and Therese Berger. Lilo held fond memories of her childhood in Germany. She was an apprentice in a large department store in Munich and attended school to learn typing, shorthand, and business.
The Second World War started in 1939. Within a few years, her two younger sisters, Isolde and Roswitha had to leave town by government resolution due to frequent bombing in Munich. Isolde, Roswitha and their classmates were evacuated to a hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen – a mountain resort south of Munich. Lilo continued to work during this time, and lived with her mother, while her father was called to join the army. During this time, Lilo's father was caught helping Jewish people in Romania and was sentenced to eight years in prison. Considered a political prisoner and a criminal, Lilo's father was forced to walk east to the Russian front with other prisoners. Her father contracted malaria and somehow was placed in an airplane with the soldiers to fly first to Lemberg, Poland and then back to Germany. When they found out Gregor was a prisoner, he was placed in prison, and again sent to the eastern front.
During the war, Lilo worked for the Reichsleitung in Munich, while living with her mother, and visiting her two younger sisters in Garmisch on Sundays. Lilo was also summoned by the German Army to operate a search light for incoming bombers and to report to a location in Austria. Due to a medical condition, Lilo traveled to Vienna, but she returned to Munich without permission to wait for the end of the war. In January 1945, the police came and wondered why Lilo had not returned to her assigned location in Austria. The next day she had to report to a medical doctor in Munich. Her father instructed her to eat a cigarette Lilo had made with tobacco and aspirin. This caused Lilo to look deathly sick when she appeared before the doctor. The doctor indicated that she was sick and sent her back home to her family.
After the war ended, Lilo worked with her father in his radio business, which had been severely damaged. They had nothing to eat, only coupons and "black market" items like one pound of butter for four hundred D-mark or $200 at the time.
Lilo spent two years in Paris working as a nanny from 1951 to 1953, then returned to Munich to work for the Belgium consulate. In the fall of 1953, Lilo's sister, Isolde immigrated to California, after converting to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In time, Lilo and Roswitha were also converted to the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, received baptism, and received their endowment in the Bern, Switzerland temple. In 1956, the three sisters were reunited when Lilo, Roswitha, and their mother also immigrated to the United States and settled in Southern California near Isolde.
In America, Lilo worked at a finance company for a short time. However, Lilo wanted a better job. She then had the opportunity to work in the recently completed Los Angeles Temple as the secretary to the Temple President in 1957. She held this position for 28 years.
Lilo, her mother and her sister Roswitha lived in Santa Monica. Lilo enjoyed going to the beach and frequenting the farmers market for German wurst. Lilo loved traveling to interesting places like the National Parks, Zions, Bryce, Grand Canyon, and to Canada. Lilo enjoyed taking her eight nieces and nephews on her many adventures.
After Lilo's younger sister, Roswitha married in 1965 Lilo continued to take care of her mother until her mother passed away July 1984. Several months later, Lilo met Boris Schiel while in her office at the Los Angeles temple. Boris had lost his wife in January 1985. Boris and Lilo started dating in spring of 1985.
In December 1985, Boris and Lilo were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple. Boris, an immigrant from Latvia, truly blessed Lilo's life. Together, Lilo and Boris served several full time missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: first, a temple mission to the Frankfurt Germany Temple (1989-1990); next, a proselyting mission to Riga, Latvia (1992-1993) (Boris was instrumental in sharing his faith in his own homeland); and last, another temple mission to two temples - the Freiberg Germany Temple (2000-2001), and the Stockholm Sweden Temple (2001-2002).
Over the years, both Boris and Lilo served faithfully in many church callings, and especially loved serving in the temple and doing family history work. They were temple workers in six temples around the world: Los Angeles (CA), Provo (UT), Frankfurt (Germany), Mt. Timpanogos (UT), Freiberg (former East Germany), and Stockholm (Sweden).
Lilo treasured her friends and loved everyone unconditionally. She so enjoyed hosting many visitors from all walks of life and from numerous countries. Lilo could remember names well and always complimented those she met. She traveled extensively before and after meeting Boris. Boris and Lilo traveled back to Europe many times to go on cruises and to enjoy their homeland.
Lilo is survived by Boris's three children: Peter Schiel, Rita Schiel, Alexander and (Jennifer) Schiel; seven grandchildren, eight nieces and nephews, and extended family.
Lilo is preceded in death by her parents, and her sisters Isolde Dellenbach and Roswitha Olson.
Family and friends are invited to attend two events celebrating Lilo's remarkable life of sacrifice, service, love, and faithfulness to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
