IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Louise Elder
Hall
June 27, 1930 – September 22, 2020
Hurricane, UT – Louise Elder Hall was a bundle of smiles and kindness. She could, at times, be puzzling, bewildering and mystical, but never boring. Born on June 27, 1930 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Ernest Alfred Elder and LaVon Duffin; Louise was in the middle of it all, having two older siblings (Ernest Elder Jr. & Marian Waters) and two younger brothers (Robert Elder & Dennis Elder, both still living). A fifth sibling, Ellen Elder, died as an infant.
The Elders changed residences frequently since Ernest's business ventures included: buying houses, using them as the family domicile while renovations were undertaken, selling the house and then repeating the cycle. Walks to Liberty Park and the Salt Lake City public library were two of her favorite childhood pastimes.
Sometime during the 1940's, Louise decided where her life would take her, at least so she thought. She was impressed at the sight of a nurse in her white uniform, complete with the mandatory cap; and determined that this was the career for her. She enrolled in the nursing program at the University of Utah; and shared a room in the nurses' cottages with Lena Hall (Robertson). This is where her envisioned path took a detour. Lena introduced Louise to her brother, Victor. From that point on, Louise majored in nursing and Victor Crosby Hall. The couple were married on December 20, 1950.
A move to Rexburg, Idaho was a mixture of joy and tribulation. Their first child, Alan, was born in 1951. But the following year, while working at the Rexburg hospital, Louise contracted polio during a nation-wide pandemic. She was paralyzed on her entire left side. Thankfully, she recovered but was plagued with after-effects for the rest of her life. No longer could she and Victor hike and swim together, activities that they both loved.
The couple's second child, Christine (m. Robert Miller) was born in Delta, Utah. The foursome moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where Wallace (m. Nancy Hall) and Janet (m. Viliami Fotu) were born. Their next move was thirteen miles down the road to Henderson, Nevada. Here, they bought their first home; endured the heartbreak of two miscarriages; and welcomed their last two children into the family: Eric (m Mireya Hall) and Mark (m. Kathy Hall). Louise's family grew to include twenty grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, all of them most fine folk!
Louise's vocations were varied. She worked as a licensed practical nurse, an elementary school substitute teacher, a social worker, and a volunteer at the Hurricane Utah Pioneer Museum.
In her church, she served as a Primary teacher, Sunday School teacher with teenage classes, and Young Women president. Two of her great loves were teaching Primary children and visiting homebound sisters to whom she delivered recordings that she made of Relief Society lessons.
She was a great listener; loved to sew and loved to read. Eventually, due to macular degeneration, listening to books on tape took the place of reading. Nothing made her happier than to see her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren care for each other and succeed in their lives. Louise loved unconditionally.
