Obituary

ST. GEORGE, UTAH - Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, Tony Mariani, passed away February 4, 2011. He was the second child of Luigi and Angelina Mariani, both from Foggia, Italy, born November 14, 1914 in New York City, New York. He married Lois Aycock on February 9, 1957 at the Presidio of San Francisco, California. Tony spent his childhood in New York attending New Utrecht High School and Columbia University where he was pursuing a medical career before he enlisted in the Army in 1940. He retired 22 years later as a Lieutenant Colonel. He saw service stateside and in the Philippines, Okinawa, Korea and France serving as a Transport Commander transporting troops and cargo. He was initiated as a Mason in France, and has been a member for over 50 years, most recently with the St. George Masonic Lodge #33. He was also a member of the San Jose Scottish Rites, the National Sojourners, and Heroes of 76, all of San Jose, California. Tony is survived by his wife Lois Mariani; his daughter, Suann Claiborne; grandsons: Ryan Kelly (Maxine) and Adam Kelly (Sarah), both of Salt Lake City, Utah; his granddaughter, Alyssa Claiborne of Salt Lake City, Utah; his great-grandson, Ashton Anthony Kelly;a great-granddaughter due in April of this year; nephews: Peter Quaranta and Ricky Masone, both of New York; and his niece, Valerie Masone of New York. He is preceded in death by his father, mother, and two sisters: Mary Quaranta and Ida Masone. A memorial service will held Friday, February 11, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah. Interment will be at the Utah State Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, 435-673-4221. The family wishes to thank Dr. Tom Jones, Robyn and the staff at Southern Utah Hospice for their care and compassion during this time and a special thank you to Bob.
