Obituary

St. George, UT - Her birth August 11, 1921 to her parents James W. and Lucile Chase Burbidge of Ogden, Utah was a joyful event as they received a girl to go with their six sons. The Burbidge household was a happy place to grow up and she spent her childhood going to schools in the area. After Madison Grammar School, she graduated from Ogden High School in 1940, continued her education in the then two-year Ogden Weber College. She pledged La Dianaeda remaining an alumni officer of the sorority. Her education was interrupted by WWII and she became an employee of the newly constructed Ogden Hill Field Air Service Command Depot. It was here she was to meet another employee, Jack Millar. A friendship became a courtship and they were married in Ogden's First Presbyterian Church in September 1942. Shortly after their marriage, the military announced a need for civilians to staff a depot in England. Lucile's husband resigned his position and departed with an Air Force cadre on the Queen Mary for Scotland. Lucile continued to work at Hill Field receiving a commendation and promotion until 1944. In September, she accepted employment with Threlkeld & Co. and moved to San Francisco.

With the merciful end of the war in 1945, happily reunited, they returned to Ogden, her husband to his former position, Lucile to be a housewife and a mother. A talented homemaker with cooking, seamstress and upholstering skills, she took great pride in establishing her first home. During the next 16 years in Ogden, she began to raise three children. She was their best friend and taught them to be independent and self-reliant. She was a compassionate and loving wife, finding time to serve as a pink lady at Dee Hospital in Ogden and later in a hospital in Lancaster, PA. She enjoyed her association with the Ogden Junior League. In 1956, the family moved to new schools and new experiences in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania.

When her husband retired in 1974, she was ready to enjoy her three passions: bridge, traveling and reading. She loved the game of bridge, in private homes, churches and in clubs. A bridge game was a day to again see her many friends and compete. It was an important activity to keep her going through the years.

Traveling began with keeping up with her husband's golf tournaments, but later, time was spent in visiting ten countries. While vacationing in Hong Kong, she enjoyed one of the first guided tours permitted into China. Later, for medical reasons, several months of each year were spent in San Diego, California.

Her interest in reading was acknowledged very early, receiving a certificate of membership in Utah's State Reading Circle in 1934. Immersed in a good book provided her great joy and comfort, progressing from small print to large print. She was a charter member of Bloomington's Literary Club. Her favorite author was Rosemunde Pilcher.

She enjoyed the growth of her family that began with her two sons and daughter and in her twilight years, 26 grandchildren and great-grandchildren have been added. She loved and cherished them all and they described her in return as the sweetest little woman who ever lived.

Declining health required services of the Beehive Homes where she celebrated her 91st birthday and 69th year of married life until passing on August 13, 2012. She was a beautiful, outgoing, loving woman that exhibited great strength during her life. She leaves behind, for those who knew and loved her, an enduring legacy of love and laughter.

Lucile is survived by her husband, Jack Millar; two sons: J. Mathew Millar and David Millar; and daughter, Jane Mallery.
