Obituary

Lynne Marie Olsen Isom, 82, of New Harmony, Utah, passed away on November 5, 2026, almost ten years to the day after her beloved husband, Bob.

Lynne was born July 24, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York, the second child of Olaf Martinius Olsen and Elna Dorothea Wibe. She grew up in Brooklyn's tight-knit Norwegian community, a neighborhood so full of immigrant families from the old country that it was nicknamed "Little Norway." Both of her parents traced their roots to Arendal, Norway, and that heritage stayed with Lynne all her life, esp. the krumkake and Norwegian pancakes she made for family gatherings.

When Lynne was about four, her father came home one evening and said, "Let's move to California." The family packed their Studebaker and drove across the country to Los Angeles. Her father built his own pantograph engraving shop, where Lynne and her older brother, Robert, worked to earn $.10 per hour helping their father after school. A self-described tomboy who preferred cops and robbers to dolls, she also adored her much-younger brother, Perry, and cared for him as if he were her own.

In 1959 the family moved to Rancho Palos Verdes, and it was there, at fifteen, that Lynne's life took the turn that would shape the rest of it. Through her close friend Cindy, she was introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She read everything she could find, felt the truth of it "without any doubt," and was baptized on May 28, 1960. Her faith became the center of her life, and she carried that devotion faithfully to the end.

On New Year's Eve of 1960, at a stake dance, a returned missionary named Bob Isom crossed the floor to ask her to dance. As she put it in her own words, "Bob won my heart." They were married in the Los Angeles Temple on July 27, 1962, and shared 54 years together until Bob's death on November 13, 2016.

Bob was a builder, and homes became the shared work and shared joy of their marriage. They began in a small apartment in Lomita, and from there Bob designed and built one house after another while Lynne turned each one into a home, making room for a growing family of six sons. They put down deep roots in Los Angeles and later in El Cajon, where they lived twenty years on a single street, and Bob's craftsmanship led to many years of work on projects for SeaWorld. Whatever the challenge, from blasting a road through granite boulders to living in a pool house or a camper trailer while the next house rose, Lynne met it at his side.

When their sons were grown, Lynne and Bob retired to the island of Kauai, where over nearly two decades they built and shaped several homes among the trees and near the beaches they loved. Together they served an eighteen-month mission in the Mexico City Temple. When Bob was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, they set out to build one last home in Utah to be nearer their children. Bob died before it was finished, and Lynne completed the house herself, a fitting final act in a life spent making homes. In 2022 she moved to a 3.3-acre farm in New Harmony, Utah, where her oldest son, Eric, and his family cared for her and made her final years, in her own words, deeply blessed.

Lynne is survived by her six sons, Eric (Anne) of Utah, Kirk (Tori) of Utah, Garth (Janelle) of California, Trevor (Jocelyn) of Utah, Terence of Texas, and Chad of Utah; her brother, Perry (Elena) Olsen of Torrance, California; eighteen grandchildren, Cameron, Grey, Micaela, Chloe, Eleanor, Margaret, Brandon (Carla-Jane), Zach, Natasha, Brock, Garin, Shelby, Ethan (Sheyla), Trevon (Mikaylee), Starlee, and Ryden, Violet, and Lucas; and six great-grandchildren, Aria June, Erik William, Athena Beatrice, Kaia, Sadie, and Theo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Isom; her parents, Olaf and Elna Olsen; and her brother, Robert Olsen.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, November 13, 2026, at the Washington City Cemetery.

Reunited at last with Bob and sealed to her family in the temple she loved, Lynne begins the reunion she always trusted would come.
