Obituary

ST. GEORGE, UT - Malcolm S. Jeppsen, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away at his home in St. George, Utah on Easter Sunday morning, April 8, 2012. Malcolm was born on November 1, 1924 in Mantua, Utah to Conrad Jeppsen and Laurine Nielsen and was the youngest of six siblings. On June 21, 1950 he married his high-school sweetheart, Marian Davis, in the Logan Utah Temple - an eternal union that includes nearly 62 years of devoted companionship in this life. Family and service to his community and church were the central themes of Malcolm's life. He was known and loved for his ability to counsel, guide and lead with focus and effectiveness sprinkled liberally with good natured humor and stories that are enjoyed and repeated often by his progeny. In the fall of 1942 Malcolm enrolled as a student at the Utah State Agricultural College but before the end of that year he had enlisted in the United States Navy and continued his education at the Navy V-12 College in Dubuque, Iowa. Following graduation in June 1944 he was sent to the Baylor University College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and in 1948 he became "Doctor" Malcolm Jeppsen. Malcolm worked in general practice, a career that he loved, for over 40 years. Through his work as a family doctor he touched the lives of people from multiple generations. Throughout the years of his working life Malcolm was also deeply involved in serving in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a Bishop, a Stake President and a Regional Representative of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles, positions that refined his leadership skills and expanded his work as a physical healer to that of a spiritual healer. In 1989 he was called to serve as a Seventy in the Second Quorum of Seventy, a full-time position that required him to end his work as a physician. He accepted the calling with faith and completed his five-year assignment with honor and excellence. Beyond his work in the community and the church Malcolm was a devoted husband and father and he loved spending time with his family. To create space between his duties and his wife and children he especially enjoyed road trips. These trips included cross-country journeys and annual outings to Lake Tahoe where boating and water skiing were favorite activities. Malcolm also built a summer home in Midway, Utah in 1975, which became a favorite family retreat. Following his service as a General Authority Malcolm relocated with Marian to St. George, Utah and in 1998 he was called to serve as the President of the St. George Temple. Malcolm and Marian loved St. George and they have been surrounded and supported there by many dear friends. Malcolm is survived by his wife Marian and their five children: Christine (David) Clark, Robert Jeppsen, John (Jody) Jeppsen, Kathy (Bill) Eargle, David (Carolyn) Jeppsen; 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, plus Jaymon Yazzie, an "adopted" son who lived with the Jeppsens from 1965 to 1975. A visitation will be held Wednesday, April 11, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 13, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building at 15 E. South Temple in Salt Lake City (Please note this change in location). Parking is available at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building or at City Creek Center. Interment will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Brigham City Cemetery.
