Obituary

Marion H. Taylor 90, formerly of Pocatello, Idaho and a long time resident of St. George, Utah died peacefully at his home of heart failure after a heroic 15 year battle with cancer, just 16 days short of his 91st birthday. Marion was born on November 2, 1918 in Lakeview, Utah, the son of Norma Tuckett Taylor and Joseph Hyrum Taylor and the oldest of 4 children. His fondest childhood memories are of working at the family farm in Lakeview and he often reminisced of thinning and hoeing beets in the summer and then cooling off by swimming in the nearby canal and in the Provo River with his dog Buss. His neighborhood near downtown Provo was like one big family. He grew up in Provo, Utah and graduated in 1937 from Provo High School. He married Rosalie Naegle of Salt Lake City on March 8, 1941 in Orem, Utah and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on November 17, 1943, while he was home on leave from the Army. They were later divorced. Three children were born to this union. He proudly served his country as a corporal in the 91st Division Artillery Battalion and as a Sergeant in Battery "F", 145th Field Artillery in the US Army in WW II and was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and resumed his studies at BYU where he graduated with a degree in Botany and Agronomy, and was a member of the Viking Club. In 1947 he began a career with Farmers Insurance Company in Boise, Idaho and in 1953 was transferred and promoted as the supervising claims representative in the Pocatello Regional Office. After retiring from Farmers Insurance, he worked for Action Realty and Clark Real Estate Co. as a real estate sales agent prior to retiring to St. George, Utah. He was a master gardener and loved to work in his yard. He was a craftsman and enjoyed building, adding many amenities to each home he owned. He also enjoyed spending time in Island Park, Idaho with his friends and family and it remained, throughout his life, one his most cherished places on earth. He loved music and was an avid reader. He also enjoyed line dancing and Square Dancing and traveled extensively, going to Hong Kong, sailing the Panama Canal and the Caribbean Islands. He made friends wherever he went. He lived a good life and wanted for little. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Alfred Shirl Taylor of Salt Lake City, Utah. He is survived by two sisters, Iris Santos and Normalind Smith, both of Heber City, Utah and his daughter and two sons, Marianne (Dennis) Hansen of Meridian Idaho and their children Shelli (Dave) Tolman of Meridian, ID, Kristi Hansen, Boise, Idaho, Chad (Kim) Hansen, Beavercreek, Ohio, Heather (Doug) Cartwright, Kimberly, Idaho, Ryan (Amber) Hansen, San Diego, CA and Nikki Hansen of Meridian, ID; his son, John (Joni) Taylor of Pocatello, Idaho and their children Christopher (Katie) Taylor, Pocatello, ID, Stephanie Taylor, Portland, OR, Jacob Johnson, Pocatello, ID, Tara (Ethan) Browning, Pocatello, ID and Shawn Stanger, Miami, FL; and son Brian (Suzanne) Taylor of St. George, Utah and their children April (Travis) Hill of St. George, Kim (Brian) Galvin of Ivins, UT; Katie (Brad) Warren of Lehi, UT; Brandon (Tonya) Taylor of Springville, Utah and Ryan (Annette) Taylor of Reno, NV. In addition to the 16 grandchildren, of whom 3 are serving LDS Missions in Brazil, New Jersey and Florida, he is survived by 30 great-grandchildren. He will long be remembered for his positive attitude, his warm cheerful smile, his hearty laugh and his frequent expressions of gratitude for every kindness extended to him, and his prolific white hair. He was a gentle and kind man and looked forward to the day when "the man upstairs will come and bring me home". Many thanks go out to Dr. Ray Richards and the staff of Gamma West Cancer Services for their friendship, their constant concern for him and for their excellent care of him. He also wanted to especially thank Marsha and Sally from Chuck-A- Rama for always treating him like royalty. A memorial service, with military rights, will be held in his honor for family and friends at Metcalf Mortuary in St. George, Utah on Saturday, October 24, 2009 from 11am to 12pm. In lieu of flowers, a contribution in his name to the Missionary Fund of the LDS Church would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary,435-673-4221.
