IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marla Madge
Stone
May 13, 1919 – January 31, 2013
St. George, Utah - Marla Madge Cook Stone departed this life on January 31, 2013. She was born May 13, 1919 in Lyman, Idaho, to Charles Freeman Cook and May Florence Thornton Cook. Madge is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 57 years, Hileman Guy Stone; son, Guy; brothers, Charles Sylvanus, Orval, Ronald and LeGrand; and sister, Nettie Cook Miller. She is survived by her daughter, Krista and son-in-law, Robert; grandchildren: David, Michael and Guy Stone, Bruce, Jamie and Ryan Robertson; and seven great-grandchildren.
Madges favorite pastime was reading; she loved to read. She also liked gardening, picnics and fly-fishing. Madge liked to embroider quilt blocks and to work on afghans. She liked square dancing in her younger years. She was thankful for and thoughtful of her friends. She had as many friends as she did because she was a good friend.
Madges father worked on dry farms east fo Rexburg when she was a young girl. She recounted the story many times when she and her brother rode the horse four miles through the snow to the two-room school house. When her brother reached his girlfriends house, Madge had to get down out of the saddle, grab on to the horses tail and was literally pulled through the snow the last mile or so until all three of them reached the school.
Madge lived with her family on the Fort Hall Indian reservation where an Indian lady named Leota Luceer showed her how to bead moccasins and let her help water the horse. The following year, her father was hired by the Union Pacific Fruitland Express and the family moved to Cuppetville, a little town close to Pocatello. Madges fondest childhood memories were of Cuppetville and the years she lived there. The family left this wonderful childhood haven when her father, Charles, became ill and they had to move back to Rexburg in 1932.
Madge met Hileman Guy Stone at a main street drugstore (Woodnancy drugstore) in Rexburg. Madge would see Hileman during the fall semester when he was awarded a scholarship during the football season. Hileman was the quarterback for the team and also played that same position in high school. Madge and Hileman married on Columbus Day, October 12, 1940 in Rexburg. Two children were born; a son, Guy, in September, 1941and a daughter, Krista, born May 1948. Hileman joined the LDS Church in 1957; their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in 1966.
Madge liked to attend religion classes and continuing education classes at the college. She was an excellent cook and home-maker. Every summer, Madge canned the familys favorite - bottled raspberries and raspberry jam. Madge complained little, when, in her last months, she endured much illness.
Graveside services will be held Monday, February 4, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at the St. George City Cemetery.
