Obituary

Mary Lou was destined to be a "mover and a shaker" from the day she was born. Mom was born in Oxnard, California. She was an all-star softball player in high school, then went on to model in Los Angeles, and was a dance instructor and competitor for the Arthur Murray Studio.

When she moved to the Central Coast of California, her life turned to managing restaurants with her mother, Blanche. Beginning with the modest City Café in King City, California to Mary Lou's in Greenfield, California, and culminating with Blanquita's Restaurant in Carmel Valley, California. It was in King City that she met and married Charles York, who worked alongside her at Mary Lou's while working in the construction industry by day.

After restaurants, she and Daddy (and Blanche) began dabbling in real estate. That's when she began to accumulate rentals. Being a "landlord" turned out to be Mom's niche. Together Mary Lou and Charles raised four daughters: Victoria, Lydia, Julie, and Mary Lou II. Together they were active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and were sealed in the Oakland temple.

Unfortunately, he died of cancer at the age of fifty-one, just a short time after his baptism. Mom has lived a lot of life in her eighty-eight years, but major milestones in her life consisted of marrying Daddy, having her daughters, and meeting another wonderful man, Dennis Landon, or "Dad" as we have affectionately called him these many years. Together, Mom and Dad have enjoyed some common interests, including traveling the United States and Canada to attend some of the many temples, and serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Sixth Crossing, Martin's Cove, Wyoming. Those things had to be a highlight of their almost 21 years together – that and their MANY projects together! Mom always said that Daddy (Charles) was a "jack of all trades, master of none" because he would try anything. Well, Dad (Dennis) has been another "jack of all trades, but a master of ALL of them"! There haven't been any projects that Mom could dream up, that Dad couldn't make come true! They made a good life together and now our Mama joins Daddy and Ann (Dad's eternal companion), as they await many fishing excursions in heaven together because we have often said that Daddy and Dad will become great friends one day!

Mary Lou is survived by her loving husband, Dennis; her daughters: Victoria (Terry) Hickman, Lydia Sewell, and Julie York; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her eternal companion, Charles York; daughter, Mary Lou II; and grandchild, Steven Sewell, Jr.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 13, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., with a visitation prior at 9:00 a.m., at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah. Interment will be in Tonaquint Cemetery, 1777 South Dixie Drive, St. George, Utah.
