Santa Clara, Utah - Mary Edith Rhoads Hohanshelt was born January 15, 1916 on her grandmothers farm near Redfield, Iowa to Emmett Stacy and Mabel Ellen Chapman Rhoads. Mothers family was deeply religious German Baptist. She attended a one room country school. She was the oldest of five children.
In 1934, she married Donald Dean Hohanshelt. They had three children and in 1944 they moved to California to raise their family.
She was an exceptional seamstress. She made both daughters wedding dresses and eventually made some costumes worn on Disneylands Main Street.
She was a Girl Scout leader. She and Donald even took up growing orchids which they both loved. In 1992, they sold their California home and came to Sant Clara, Utah where they spent their remaining time.
Mary passed away January 5, 2012, just 10 days before her 96 th birthday, She was a good Christian woman who did her best in everything she did.
Mary is survived by her children: Robert (Dorothy) Hohanshelt of Scottsdale, Arizona, Mary Louise (Robert) Irwin of Santa Ana, California and Donna Mae Baker of Santa Clara, Utah; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Alice and Nellie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; parents; one brother; and one sister.
A memorial service will be held Friday, January 13, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, 611 North 2450 East, St. George, Utah. Interment will follow at the Santa Clara City Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Metcalf Mortuary (435) 673-4221.
