Obituary

St. George, Utah – Maxine Hazel North Keller, age 100, died June 20, 2018 in St. George, Utah from causes incident to age. After a long, gracious and dignified life she passed with joy from the ones she loved here to the ones she loves there. Maxine was born September 4, 1917 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Warren Lyman and Hazel Montgomery North.

Maxine attended both elementary and junior high at Madison School, graduating from Granite High School. Though Maxine spent her young years growing up in the Salt Lake area, she remained proud of her Wasatch County heritage, spending many summers in Charleston and Midway. While at Granite High School Maxine received business training in shorthand, typing and bookkeeping, allowing her to be immediately employed following graduation. This early employment was a significant event in her life as this period was during the critical depression era. The hardship of those years remained a key influence on Maxine throughout the rest of her life. Later she was employed at Utah Woolen Mills where she met Douglas Clifford Keller. They were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on February 5, 1942. Shortly following their marriage Doug entered the Navy. Maxine joined him while stationed at The Farragut Naval Training Station, (a former U.S. Navy training center located on Lake Pend Oreille in Bayview, Idaho) where she was employed at the U.S. Naval Hospital.

Following the war years Maxine and Doug returned to the Salt Lake City area. Employment transfers eventually took them to Seattle, Washington, DC, Chicago, Pittsburg and San Francisco. They retired to St. George, Utah in 1985. Maxine served in many callings in the LDS Church, Relief Society President, Primary President, Young Women and Sunday School. She was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers which she joined as a high school student.

Maxine is survived by two sons: Michael Keller (Suzan) of Chelan, WA and Craig Keller (Janet) of Portland, OR. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Andrea Keller, Meredith Stankiewicz, Craig and Drew Keller; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband who passed in 1989; parents; grandson, Gregory Keller; sister, Phyllis Gerrard; and brothers: Dallas and Monte North.

The family wishes to express thanks and appreciation to the staff from the Meadows Assisted Living in St. George, Dr. Kent McDonald (her doctor and friend for over 30 years), also her loving family and friends who often visited during her later years. Your visits and time spent meant more to Mom than words can express.
