Obituary

ST. GEORGE - Maxine Abbott Pendleton was the first daughter of Gus Pendleton and Marvel Abbott Pendleton. She was born Jan. 15, 1923 in Cedar City, Utah. She lived most of her life in St. George, Utah. She died Dec. 22, 2009 at her home in St. George. Maxine married Grant Brooks on May 4, 1941 and he passed away on Jan. 21, 1955. They had four children Dawn (Buck Humphries), Joey (the late Bob McBride), Bill Brooks (Charlene), Bobi (Jess Eiring) and Susie (Frank Carter). She is the grandmother of 20, great-grandmother of 50 and the great-great-grandmother of 14. She was preceded in death by: brother, Keith Pendleton (Gay) and sister, Gloria Westover. She is survived by: sister, Bonita Ashby (Roger Boers); brothers, Dan Pendleton (Beate) and Jim Pendleton (Colleen). Maxine raised her children and remained a widow until she met Jess Phillips and they 'ran off' and were married for Time in the St. George Temple in 1976, adding five more children to the family, Jean, Art, Tom, Sue and Ray. Maxine was widowed again in 1999. Maxine was always an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in all of the auxiliaries at various times in her life. She had a burning testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Maxine lived with diabetes for over 50 years, was blind and confined to a wheelchair for many years. She was always cheerful, quick to laugh and hugged everyone with a good scratch on the back. She never dwelt on the negative, but was always positive. She was an inspiration to all that met her. The family would like to thank Zions Way Hospice for the kind and loving care that was given to Maxine at the end of her life. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. George LDS 8th Ward (Main Street) Chapel, 160 S. Main St., St. George, Utah. Visitations will be held Sunday, December 27th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd. and on Monday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the church, prior to services. Interment will be in the St. George City Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, 435-673-4221.
