Obituary

St. George, Utah – Mel passed away peacefully and quietly at home on March 6, 2017, at the age of 98, one month short of his 99th birthday. He was born in Gunlock, Utah on April 19, 1918 to Francis Wallace Leavitt and Mary Euphrasia Nielsen.
According to his Mission President, he served a "Remarkable and Outstanding" mission in the Central States Mission. While serving his mission he met Ellen June Hall, who was serving in the same mission, and they married three days after she got home on March 25, 1943 in the Salt Lake Temple. He always said she was the girl of his dreams.
Two months later he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served his country as a Paratrooper in World War II, where he was preserved by the hand of the Lord and miraculously escaped death many times.
Mel and June moved to Fresno, California, in 1955, where they reared six children.  Mel operated his own fencing company and served in the Church as Bishop and as Stake President. He later served with his wife as a Senior Missionary in Venezuela and Peru. He was called to serve as a Regional Representative of the Twelve to Bogota, Columbia.
He retired to Veyo, Utah and frequently spoke about his many dear friends there.
Mel is predeceased by his wife and one son, Mark J. Leavitt.  He is survived by his children: M. Craig Leavitt, Vicki Ellen Driggs, Lyne Morgan, Lance R. Leavitt, and Matthew K. Leavitt. He was very proud of his posterity which consisted of 17 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Veyo City Cemetery.
