Obituary

St. George, Utah - Michael Lester Collins Williamson, after a courageous battle with cancer, passed away July 21, 2012 at his home in St. George, with his wife, Linda, by his side. He was born January 10, 1942 in Cedar City, Utah to Lester and Adawna Hamblin Williamson. Mike was the big brother to Joseph, Paul and Rick.

He was married to Gayle Gilbert in Salt Lake City in 1968, and was the proud father of their children, Charles and Paige. After their divorce, Mike met and married Linda Covington in St. George in 1985 and was proud to add Lance to his family. Mike loved his children and adored his grandchildren: Rowdy, Torie, Chance, Kevin, Jody, Ruby, Roman, Desmond and Kysa.

Mike graduated from Parowan High School and The University of Utah. He thrived in his work in the Utah Parks at Bryce Canyon, Zion Lodge and also the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. After 34 years of service, he retired from the Department of Workforce Services.

Mike was very active in local civic groups including the Exchange Club, the Chamber of Commerce and the Dixie Sunshiners. He was a volunteer with the Salvation Army, Dixie Heritage Center and Pine Valley Volunteer Fire Department.

Mike loved life, had a heart of gold and made friends wherever he went. He was an avid reader with a thirst for knowledge. He loved to travel and he and Linda saw the world together, occasionally joined by their children and grandchildren, but always with his friends. He was a role model and mentor to many.

Mike truly cared for the many people he met during his travels with his grandchildren in all areas of the country with motocross racing. He was known as "Mikey" to many and "Grandpa Mikey" to the lucky.

He will be remembered for his big smile, ready laugh, for giving nicknames and his great advice. His departure leaves a void in the lives of many.

Mike is survived by his wife of 27 years, Linda; sons: Charles (Amie) of Salt Lake City and Lance (Sheila) of St. George; daughter, Paige (Deleone) Quintana of Salt Lake City; his father, Lester; brothers: Joseph (Leslie) Williamson and Rick (Carol) Williamson; sister-in-law, Jeani; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Adawna; brother Paul; and step-mother, Maurine.

In honoring Mikes wishes, an open house celebrating his life will be held Friday, July 27, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Pioneer Center of the Arts Social Hall, 212 North Main Street, St. George, Utah. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
