St. George, UT - Michael Brent Shahan, 51, of Hurricane, Utah passed to a better place May 20, 2009 in St. George, Utah. He was born August 8, 1957 in Bakersfield, California to James Albert and Delma E. Shahan. Having grown up there, he graduated from Bakersfield South High School. He worked for several companies, CDL in hand, he drove the country coast to coast in a 18 wheeler, with his close and long time friend Bob Hatfield. Oh the stories they could tell of their youth would entertain for hours, laughter was always around them. Later Brent bought his own trucks, forming Shahan Trucking. Having tired of a life on the road, he sought to learn the operation of heavy equipment and construction. In 1992, he started to work for Sturgeon Bros. Construction, quickly taking in all knowledge shared by others. Bear River Contractors brought him to southern Utah in 1994. Moving away in 1998, he found later that he missed the Red Hills, returning to Hurricane in 2003, working for AT Asphalt Paving until the time of his death. There are many roads, subdivisions, business pads and parking lots in California, Idaho, Oregon and Utah that he did the dirt work on. Brent loved being a finish blade operator and often commented he liked building roads, etc. that would be there for a long time. Having to tolerate the fear of flying, he found himself enjoying the world of cruising. He truly enjoyed the sites of Ensenada, Mexican Riviera, Western Caribbean, and his dream, Alaska, The Inside Passage. He loved fishing with family and friends, but said often catching was better. He enjoyed a fishing trip to Gustavas, Alaska...if only he did not have to fly to get there. He married Nancy Andrews June 5, 1993 in Atwater, California. He is survived by his wife Nancy; brothers Larry (Patricia) Shahan and Brian (Alexandra and nephew Theo) Shahan; half brother Bill (Barbara) Shahan; Half sisters Wanda (Joe) Cavello and Ruby (Robert) Foster; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; step-children Melissa (Wayne) Sherman, Darrin (Jayne) Heaps and Douglas (April) Heaps; and 11 step-grandchildren, all of whom thought the sun rose and set in him. He is preceded in death by his father, Albert, and cherished uncle Roy McNeley. The family wishes to have donations sent to the Dixie Regional Cardiovascular Unit and ICU. The doctors, nurses and staff were greatly appreciated for their care and treatment of our loved one during this time. We are thankful for their dedication.
