IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mike
Bringhurst
September 22, 1948 – August 1, 2023
Hurricane, Utah – John Michael "Mike" Bringhurst left us on August 1, 2023, after a long neurological illness. Mike was born September 22, 1948, in St. George, Utah to John William "Bill" and Jewell Mitchell Bringhurst. He always said he had an idyllic childhood growing up in St. George, surrounded by good neighbors and friends. Mike loved playing tennis and was on the Dixie High School tennis team. He graduated from Dixie High School in 1966 and went on to play for the Dixie Junior College Tennis team, where they won the ICAC tennis championship.
Mike was called to serve in the California North mission. He loved the area and the people he served. Upon returning from his mission, he went back to Dixie Junior College where he met his future wife, Charlotte DeMille, during D-Week at Dixie. It was love at first sight for them both. They were married on May 29, 1971, in the St. George Temple.
After graduating from Brigham Young University, Mike accepted a position as director of a child development center in Rupert, Idaho. Six years later, Mike had the opportunity to return home to southern Utah to work in the insurance business with his father-in-law, Ed DeMille. For over 30 years he owned Bringhurst-Leavitt Agency in Hurricane and Kanab. He loved his clients, and they became friends. He retired in 2020. During these years, Mike and Charlotte became parents to their four children: Ryan, Mitch, Cami, and Toni. He was a wonderful husband, son and brother, a great father, and a devoted grandpa. Mike loved to travel. His favorite vacations were family trips to Hawaii, New York, and Disneyland.
While Mike enjoyed working in the insurance business and associating with good people, the position gave him the freedom to explore his other passions. The first of these was baseball. He became a coach and umpire for Little League, and later joined on as assistant coach to Troy Jolley at Hurricane High School. He liked coaching but loved umpiring even more. He was an umpire for fifteen years at 1A, 2A, and 3A schools, and was well-known to the 1A schools as the "umpire with the Mustang". In 2018, Mike was inducted as an official into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame.
In 1980, Mike became a member of the Hurricane Fire Department, where he served for 39 years. He was a firefighter for 26 years and a firefighter/EMT for 13 years. Of all the jobs he held, this was the one he loved the most. Mike loved serving the community. He was on the library board for years.
He is survived by his spouse, Charlotte; son, Ryan (Robin); son, Mitch (Kelli); daughter, Cami (Ryan) Ranzenberger; daughter, Toni (Fred) Canard; seven grandchildren: Samantha, Ivie, Britton, Carli, Drew, McKinley, and Ashlyn; mother, Jewell; and brother, Doug (Ellen) Bringhurst. Mike is preceded in death by his father, Bill.
