IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Nad R.
Brown
September 19, 1936 – October 11, 2024
St. George, Utah - Nad Richard Brown was born September 19, 1936, at home in Koosharem, Utah, the youngest child of Arnol Richard and Myrtle Camp Brown. His siblings were Margaret, Newell, Nan and Joy, all of whom have preceded him in death. Nad passed away October 11, 2024.
His early days were spent herding sheep and helping his father around the farm in beautiful Grass Valley, Sevier County—a place he always considered home. In the summer of his ninth year, he contracted polio and spent three months in the Salt Lake General Hospital. A few years later, his father died of cancer, leading his mother to sell the farm and move with her youngest son to Richfield, Utah.
Nad attended Richfield schools, graduating from high school in 1954. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he spent the majority of his service at Lowry Air Force Base, in Denver, Colorado. After being discharged he served a mission to the British Isles. He loved his British Mission and kept in touch with many missionaries and converts in Scotland and England throughout his life.
Following his mission, he enrolled at BYU where he met and married the love of his life, Markay Daniels, from Seattle, Washington via small southern Idaho towns.
After graduation, he took a job in the Personnel Department at BYU. While returning from a business trip in 1965, he was a passenger and fortunate survivor of the worst plane crash in Salt Lake Airport history. He carried with him a weight in being spared and a desire to make a meaningful difference with the extra time he'd been granted.
While an employee at BYU, he completed a master's degree in public administration in 1970. This led to a career opportunity as Colorado State Director of Training and a family move to Denver. His experiences there, including training with the School of Mines, opened the door for Nad to bring his family back home to Sevier County, Utah, as the Administrative Manager of Southern Utah Fuel Company. Always the adventurer, he later joined the marketing division of the company and sold Utah coal as far away as Ireland and China. His lifelong interest and side hustle was always real estate, where he dabbled constantly buying various properties, putting his boys to work cleaning them up.
After retirement, he and Markay served missions in Russia as Country Directors for Humanitarian Services, as Clean Water missionaries to Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Moldova, and as Trainers of Welfare and Humanitarian Missionaries in the Missionary Training Center for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Known from his youth for his unique ability to spin a yarn, Nad joked that he never let the truth get in the way of a good story. He wrote several "roadshows," composing dialogue, lyrics and with his wife, original music. Creation was part of his DNA. His energy led him to climb Oregon's Mt Hood and other mountains in his beloved West. He played roller hockey and frequently roller-bladed well into his sixties. A great humorist, his wit and charisma put others at ease and made all feel welcome. He became well known as a speaker who had the rare ability to unite and elevate the hearts and minds of his audience. He was asked to speak at the funerals of virtually every friend and family member he ever knew. He wrote hundreds of thoughtful poems about life, publishing three books of his work. His hands loved carving wood into beautiful birds, whales, and even one magical elephant.
He is survived by his wife Markay, and sons Colin, Gary, Sean, Scott and Ryan, their spouses, thirteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
