Obituary

Ivins, Utah - Nancy passed away on Dec. 16, 2019 in St. George, UT, at the age of 86. She was born on Nov. 25, 1933, in Salt Lake City, UT, to Donald Whitaker Folsom and Ellen Rose Binns. She was the 5 th of five children and grew up in Salt Lake City and in Centerville. Her siblings are Lila Binns Folsom, Marvin Hugh Folsom, Iris Josephine Folsom and Jerry Binns Folsom, all of whom have proceeded her in death. She loved living in Centerville in her grandparents' old home, with its gardens and cherry orchards. She married Gordon Ernest Weinheimer on June 7, 1961, in the Salt Lake temple.

Nancy's interests included her church, her family, music, gardening, family history and temple service. She participated in orchestra, chorus and service club in high school. She took piano and organ lessons, and also played the flute in high school. Unfortunately, when she was 17, she was in a serious car accident with her sister Lila and sustained back injuries. After this, she suffered with varying degrees of back pain her whole life.

When she started at BYU, she discovered she had a powerful singing voice. She was in the A Cappella Choir as a freshman, took voice lessons and played the flute in the concert band. She participated in many choral and opera productions while at BYU, singing lead parts in some of them. She graduated with a degree in Vocal Performance in 1959. Music is one of Nancy's great talents and she loves it!

Nancy took some time out from college to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1957 to 1958. She served in the Northwestern States Mission, where she would later return as a newlywed. Her mission president helped her keep her voice in practice by asking her to accompany him and sing for the mission as he travelled.

After being married in 1961, Nancy and Gordon lived first in Calgary, Canada, for a short time and then in Moses Lake, WA. In 1963, they moved to South Florida for Gordon to work for the United States Sugar Corporation in Clewiston, FL. They lived there for 30 years, except for a short time in Belle Glade to begin with. Along the way, they were blessed with 5 children themselves. The church in Florida was small and struggling so they spent much of their time serving and supporting the church there. They missed their extended family very much and so every few years, they would pack up the station wagon and drive to Utah to visit family.

Nancy was a dedicated wife and mother, spending most of her time taking care of her family and their home. She always cooked dinner at night and it was good to have that time as a family daily. She spent time with her kids, like taking them to the library and reading books to them, baking cookies, and taking them swimming at the local pool. In later years, she did her best to keep in touch with her kids and their growing families. She sent birthday cards and checks to everyone for many years. She was very sad when she was no longer able to send cards to her family members.

Nancy also had an interest in the medical field, so for a period of years she volunteered as a "pink lady" at the local hospital in Clewiston. Their volunteers would help out wherever they were needed. She taught piano lessons and some voice lessons for a number of years as well and was a substitute teacher in the local schools from time to time. When all her kids were gone, she volunteered at the library as the "Library Storybook Lady". Later, in St. George, she volunteered at a medical clinic and took a medical terminology class at Dixie State to be more informed.

Nancy spent most of her spare time serving in her church. From the day she arrived she became the branch organist, a calling she held for 30 years. She also played the piano for Primary, Young Women and Relief Society. These were the days when these meetings were during the week. Our family lived 30 minutes from the building, so it was quite the commitment! She served as Primary chorister as well and had to both play the piano and lead most of the time. Nancy was always a visiting teacher and her route was very spread out over many miles, but she was diligent. She would usually take one of her daughters with her. She volunteered to be the YW president when her daughters were that age, because there was no program in place. She served in Relief Society and Primary presidencies along the way. She served as the stake music chairman for a time, a calling she particularly enjoyed. Later she opened the Family History Center in Belle Glade and served as its director. It was the first of its kind in south Florida. She also taught Seminary for a few years because she wanted her son Keith to have the opportunity. She was always a great support to the missionaries in the area, who knew they could come by the Weinheimer home and have dinner or encouragement. She gave many rides to other church members who were unable to drive the distance to church, including driving weekly to Primary with any kids who wanted to go. Besides meals and help in times of need for others, one school year she took in a teenage girl from the branch whose home life was abusive. One old friend from Clewiston mentioned recently that the flowers she planted on their front walk are still there and that he loved her example of charity. And she always loved to share her singing talent with anyone who asked her.

In 1993, when Gordon retired, Nancy and Gordon moved to Ivins, UT. For many years Nancy had wanted to return to her Utah, but when it actually happened, she missed Florida very much. It took a while to adjust to a completely new life there. Merrill and his family were there though, and they enjoyed that aspect of Ivins.

However, she loved singing with the Southwest Symphony Chorale. She participated in many productions (chorale, solo and ensemble) for many years until about 2012, when her health began to decline. She told me (Beth) once that she had sung Handel's "Messiah" eighteen times (I think—it was a lot!) in her life. She was the alto solo for "He Was Despised".

She and Gordon took a couple of significant trips in their retirement, other than many trips to visit their children and grandchildren for various occasions and reunions. They travelled to England and also took a cruise to Alaska.

Nancy also loved her temple service. When she moved to Ivins, she began working in the temple locker room. From May 1996 to Oct. 1997, Nancy and Gordon served a temple mission to the Toronto Canada temple. After this mission, they both served in the temple until 2011, when Nancy had spinal surgery and was no longer able. In looking back on her service efforts in the Family History Center and in the temple, she shares, "I have had many experiences of communication with some of these ancestors for whom we have completed ordinances. Some have urged me to hasten my efforts to get it done or rejoiced with me when I found their data which I had searched for a long time or given me hints about where to look. I have also received help from my mother in this research on her lines."

For the ending of her life history, Nancy wanted some quotes to be included:

"Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's learning to dance in the rain." Vivian Greene

"I pray that we might treat each other with more kindness, more courtesy, more humility, and patience, and forgiveness." Pres. Howard W. Hunter
