IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Nola Ruby
Griffith Borrowman
February 5, 1923 – April 7, 2014
St. George, Utah - Our loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, Nola Ruby Griffith Borrowman, quietly passed away April 7, 2014 at 91 years of age. She was born on February 5, 1923 in Nampa, Idaho, the oldest child of Ira W. Griffith and Ruby Euzell Stevens. Nola grew up on a farm in Homedale, Idaho which, at the time, was a very small old west town.
Nola met her sweetheart, Heber Melvin Borrowman on a bus when he was a Navy sailor on his way home to Idaho. They married on March 20, 1947 in Wilder, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on July 15, 1947.
Nola was the mother of eight children and helped to mother many foster children. She was very tenderhearted and cared deeply that little children be loved and nurtured. She was "Grandma B" to many children whether they were family or not.
Nola was one of three civilian women in the United States who inspected B-17 airplanes during World War II. She also was a mechanic, working on airplanes and vehicles. Mel was a baker in the Navy, so many friends thought it was strange to see dad in the kitchen and mom working on the car, but their children thought it was perfectly normal.
Her passion was sewing, which began when she was tall enough to run a treadle machine. Nola loved to design clothing, from childrens outfits to wedding gowns. She was proud to display her creations in fabric stores. One of her greatest joys was in making blankets for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to celebrate special events such as births, baptisms and marriages.
Nola was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions. She was very compassionate and loved visiting and serving women. She deeply enjoyed teaching children to read, especially her grandchildren and elementary students in the Washington County school district. It was her joy to make others smile and laugh, and she remained active in this pursuit throughout her life.
Nola is survived by her sisters and brothers: Verla (Glen) Rose, Dean (Donna) Griffith, Barbara Hamilton and Hal (Judy) Griffith; sons: Richard (Mary) Borrowman, Thomas (Larean) Borrowman, Steven (Kimberly) Borrowman, Jerry (Yvonne) Borrowman, Samuel (Shawna) Borrowman and Scott Borrowman; daughter, Janet (William) Howes; and son-in-law, Douglas Glidden. She has 33 grandchildren and about a million great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mel; and her daughter, Judith Ann Borrowman Glidden.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah. Interment will follow services in the St. George City Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Metcalf Mortuary,
