Washington, UT - Orvil Orlin Schamens, 85, passed away January 31 in Washington, Utah. He was born on August 26, 1925 in Bryant, South Dakota to Orlin and Abbie Jenssen Schamens. Orvil grew up on a farm in South Dakota and he joined the Navy in 1943. He was stationed in Seattle, Washington where he met Dorine Schulz and they were married on October 19, 1945. The war had ended and they moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where Orvil attended a Refrigeration Trade School. But before he was able to finish the course, Uncle Sam called him back to serve in the Navy in San Diego where he was able to finish his education. He eventually went into business as a heating and air conditioning contractor in El Cajon, California and retired in 1988. Orvil enjoyed hunting and fishing in South Dakota, but California was an ideal place to play golf so he took a few lessons and soon joined the weekly golfers. He is survived by his wife, Dorine; a daughter, Linda Chesnut of Washington, UT and a son, Keith Schamens of San Diego, CA, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one brother, Charles in Watertown, SD, and three sisters in Oregon: Ada Hanson and Evelyn Moller of Canby, and Jean Parrett of Portland. We will honor Orvil on February 26, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Atonement Lutheran Church, 10245 Loma Rancho Drive, Spring Valley, CA. His ashes will be entombed at Ft Rosecrans Cemetery in Pt Loma, CA at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
