Obituary

Hurricane, Utah – Paul B. Maag, age 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 1, 2025.

Paul was born on May 21, 1940, in Provo, Utah to Harold Henry and Velma Bigelow Maag. He grew up in Orem with his brother and two sisters. After graduating from Orem High School he moved to Cedar City, Utah to attend College and that is where he met and fell deeply in love with his sweetheart, Ella Jelene Stratton. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the St. George LDS Temple on September 2, 1959.

Paul found true joy in working outdoors, where he could pour his energy and creativity into building and shaping beautiful yards and landscapes. His passion for gardening was unmatched, he had a remarkable green thumb and could make anything flourish. He especially loved growing tomatoes and roses, tending to them with care and patience, and taking pride in watching them thrive. Whether planting flowers or designing entire outdoor spaces, he took pride in every detail. Paul also passed on his strong work ethic to his family, leading by example. He believed in giving every task his all and never stopping until the job was done right. His dedication and love for nature left a lasting legacy in every garden he touched and in the hearts of those he taught.

Paul had a deep love for fishing, especially those cherished trips up to Fish Lake. There was something truly special about the peaceful waters and the thrill of the catch, but what he treasured most was the time spent trying to reel in those elusive, giant lake trout alongside his family and friends. Those moments—full of laughter, quiet anticipation, and shared stories—were among his happiest and most unforgettable.

His family was the heart of his world and his greatest source of joy throughout his life. He loved gathering everyone together, especially during the holidays. Hosting Christmas and Easter celebrations at his home brought him immense happiness, and he cherished the laughter, conversation, and togetherness that filled those special days. He made a heartfelt effort to remember birthdays and celebrate his loved ones in every way he could. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he adored each of them deeply.

One of his favorite simple pleasures was indulging in Little Debbie and Hostess treats—always eager to share whatever he had with those around him. He also had a passion for music and played the piano with beautiful skill, bringing warmth and joy into any room. A devoted Utah Jazz fan, he rarely missed a game, cheering on his team with the same enthusiasm he brought to every part of his life.

Paul is survived by four of his wonderful children: Paul (I'ann), Mark (Susan), Lisa (Tracey) Jason, and daughter-in-law, Claudia; his 20 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; brother Wayne; and sister, Kathryn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Velma Maag; his beautiful wife, Ella; his son, Troy; his sister, Helen; grandparents and other cousins, in-laws, and extended family.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many friends, neighbors, and ward members who surrounded Paul with love, kindness, and support throughout the past years. Your visits, prayers, and acts of service meant more than words can express, and your presence truly lifted his spirits. We are also deeply grateful to the incredible medical teams who cared for him with such dedication and compassion. Their tireless efforts and expertise gave him strength and comfort during his journey. Though Paul faced physical challenges, he met them with quiet strength and unwavering resilience, never allowing them to dampen his spirit or his love for life.
