St. George, UT
– Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and the Patriarch of our family, Paul Knighton Nielson, age 91, crossed the veil into eternity on November 14, 2017.
He has always been a shining example of true faith and devotion to the Lord. We are excited for him to be able to continue his great influence for good as he shares his knowledge, wisdom and love with so many of our Heavenly Father's children. He has blessed countless lives during his time here in mortality.
Paul was born August 22, 1926 in Gunnison, Utah to Elmer and Gladys Nielson. He married the love of his life, Eris Sondrup, on June 23, 1948 in the Manti LDS Temple. They celebrated 69 years of marriage. They were blessed with five children: Doug (Madelyn) Nielson, Marilyn (Craig) Smith, Janice (Cliff) Myers, David Nielson, and Daniel (Deanna) Nielson.
Paul graduated from Gunnison High School and the University of Utah, where he received his Pharmacy Degree. He practiced pharmacy until his passing. He owned and operated Beaver Drug for 36 years. He was one of the original organizers of Beaver Valley Hospital. He served as the pharmacist for the long-term care until his passing. He loved the association with all involved. Paul had a love for all of the people of Beaver and enjoyed serving them in any capacity he was called to.
He loved the mountains and the outdoors and spent any spare moment on the mountain. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and passed those traits on to his family.
After selling his store, he moved to St. George to work in the temple as a Sealer. Many special associations and friendships were built.
He loved to golf with the guys and he was an excellent golfer! He enjoyed the game and the companionship of this group of golfers.
He was called as the Patriarch of the Boulder Ridge Stake and welcomed any and all into his home to receive their blessing. He loved the youth and felt so happy to give them a blessing from their Heavenly Father.
Paul loved sports and enjoyed participating in basketball, baseball and track, excelling in each. He was always good for a story and memory of an event, race or sharing his knowledge on any given topic. His family was always taught to do their best or it wasn't worth doing. He loved following his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in each of their activities, and being involved in their lives.
Paul served in the United States Army during World War II, serving in the Philippines for two years. He always felt a true love and appreciation for the people there. He was involved in the first baptism in the Philippine Islands.
Paul was a faithful and devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings: Home Teacher, Bishop, Stake President, Regional Welfare Representative, Sealer and Patriarch. He earned the Silver Beaver Award in Scouting, a huge honor, since he was a dedicated supporter of the scouting program. He truly loved the gospel and what it can offer. His love of family, people and church were his focus on this earth. We will always be grateful for the life he lived and the love and service he always gave.
We would like to thank Ashley, Codi and Karen from Dixie Home Care for their remarkable care of our husband, father and grandfather during this time.
Paul is survived by his wife, Eris, of 69 years; his 5 children and their spouses, 29 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law, Lori. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Nedra (Marion) Tree, and Margery (Robert) Beck; brother, Russell Nielson; grandson, Aaron David Smith.
