St. George, Utah - Peggy Nell Nielson, 80, passed away February 19, 2011 while surrounded by her loving family after a brave and valiant battle with cancer. She was born March 31, 1930 in Emmett, Texas to Travis Dewitt McAfee and Georgia Lee Thorn. Peggy married the love of her life and best friend, Kenneth Edward Nielson, on November 21, 1947 and were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Los Angeles LDS Temple on November 22, 1958, thus having spent 50 wonderful years together. Together, they had eight children: Carl (Joann) Nielson of St. George, UT, Steven (Claudia) Nielson of American Fork, UT, Pamela (Ladd) Hadlock of Bountiful, UT, Paula (Jeff) Williams of Las Vegas, NV, James (Brenda) Nielson of Salt Lake City, UT, Polly (Bruce) Billings of Salem, UT, Kenneth Nielson of Ivins, UT and Penny (Mike) Child of Layton, UT. She had 29 grandchildren and 33 great- grandchildren whom she loved most dearly and in whom she was very proud. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Edward Nielson; her parents; her sister, Mary Dell McAfee; brother, Ralph Dewitt McAfee; grandson, Jeremy Edward; and great-grandson, Logan. Peggy had many hobbies, including playing the trumpet and the piano. She loved "Big Band" music and especially loved The Wizard of Oz, including the song, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". But, above all else, Peggy's joy and devotion was to her family. She anxiously awaited the Holiday Seasons for the family gatherings that would take place. Peggy was a strong and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served faithfully in many callings including the Relief Society and Primary Presidencies. She was a stalwart and devoted visiting teacher and loved all those whom she served. She loved serving others and continued to do so until the day she left this frail existence. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. We'll see you again Peggy," Somewhere Over the Rainbow". Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Foster Hills LDS Ward Chapel, 1740 East Foremaster Drive, St. George, Utah. Visitations will be held Tuesday, February 22nd from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd. and on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel, prior to services. Interment will be Thursday, February 24, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Camp Williams Cemetery in Salt Lake City, Utah. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, 435-673-4221.
