IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Peggy Pitchforth
Steele
February 4, 1943 – April 23, 2021
Peggy Ann Pitchforth Steele was born on February 4, 1943, in Glendale, California, the adored first child of Shirl H. and Bernice M. Pitchforth. After a long illness, she passed away peacefully at home in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, April 23, 2021, at the age of 78.
Peggy was a toddler when her parents moved back home to St. George, Utah. She attended local schools graduating from Woodward Junior High School, as valedictorian and student body president, and from Dixie High School in 1961 where she was a class officer, drum major, cheerleader, honor student and volunteered in many community and charity causes. As a senior, she placed third nationally in the Elks Lodge Leadership competition, a contest entered by 60,000 students nationwide. An accomplished pianist, Peggy played in a dance band combo and accompanied many vocalists and other musicians. She was well-loved by her peers and is remembered by hometown friends and family as being smart, funny, enthusiastic, talented, a kind friend, a capable leader and a beautiful soul.
After freshman year at Dixie Jr. College, Peggy attended the University of Utah, The Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California, and The New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, as a piano performance major. She especially enjoyed playing the music of Chopin.
While in Boston, Peggy met her husband, John Michael Steele, who was attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. They married on December 21, 1968, in the St. George Utah Tabernacle.
The Steeles first lived in Boston while John was a development engineer for General Radio Company. Their first two children were born and Peggy taught piano to local students. In 1978, John joined Ford Motor Company and the family relocated to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where Peggy spent the remainder of her life. They were blessed with a third child shortly after moving. With three children and a house to maintain, Peggy's time was spent as a loving mother and homemaker while filling the house with beautiful music.
Through years of declining health, Peggy was faithfully cared for by her husband and children. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Peggy is survived by her husband John M. Steele of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; her children Michael Steele and his wife, Marcy, of Livonia, Michigan; Kathryn Steele Valente, her husband Tony Valente and their children Kaitlyn and Aidan of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; Mary Steele Grizzard, her husband Scott Grizzard and their children Madison and Emily of Atlanta, Georgia.
She is also survived by her brother, Charles Pitchforth, and sister, Sharon Pitchforth Snow and husband Ronald Snow, all of St. George, Utah, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Her life was celebrated with private family services Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at A J Desmond & Sons Mortuary in Troy, Michigan. The service can be viewed at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUvLYJ-2kjs
Interment was at the Oakview Cemetery in Royal Oak, Michigan.
