Obituary

Perry LaVern Matthews was born on December 23, 1936, at the Cottonwood Maternity Home in Murray, Utah, and passed away on February 7, 2026, leaving behind a life rich in family, friendship, service, and quiet strength. He was raised in Hunter, Utah, where he developed the qualities that would define him throughout his life: kindness, loyalty, a strong work ethic, and an exceptional ability to make and keep friends. Perry was especially close to his siblings, and many of his earliest memories were shaped by family games, school activities, church involvement, and time spent together outdoors. These bonds remained important to him throughout his life.

As a young man, Perry was active in school, church, and sports. He was a natural athlete, known not only for his skill but also for his good sportsmanship. After graduating from Cyprus High School in 1955, he went directly to work at Kennecott Copper, demonstrating responsibility and dedication from an early age. Perry later enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles, this experience remained a meaningful part of his life.

Following his military service, Perry pursued further education at Henager's Business College and built a successful career as an accountant. He eventually became the manager of his company's accounting department, where he was respected for his integrity, reliability, and leadership. Perry believed in hard work and consistency, values he quietly modeled for his family.

On January 19, 1962, Perry married Betty Jean Sizemore in the Salt Lake Temple. Their marriage was one of happiness, devotion and partnership. Together they built a loving home and raised a family rooted in faith, activity, and togetherness. Shortly after their marriage, Betty's two sisters, Shelly and Jackie, were welcomed in their home where they completed their upbringing along with their own children. Perry was a devoted father who delighted in his children and later took great joy in being a wonderful and engaging father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Family life included church involvement, motorcycle riding, and summer holidays camping, hunting and fishing at Little Fish Lake in the Uinta Mountains. These activities have brought countless shared memories that strengthened lifelong bonds.

Perry was known for being dependable and generous with his time. Friends were always welcome in his home, and throughout his life he was rarely without close companions. Whether supporting loved ones during difficult times or quietly offering help where it was needed, Perry lived with compassion and steadiness. His faith remained an anchor in his life, guiding his choices and relationships.

In later years, Perry faced health challenges with courage and gratitude, continuing to express love for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and appreciation for life's blessings. He will be remembered as a faithful husband, a loving father and grandfather, a loyal brother, and a true friend. Perry LaVern Matthews leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and enduring kindness that will be cherished by all who knew him.

Perry is survived by his loving wife, Betty; his children: Dale, Lane (Angela), Greg (Monica), Cody; sisters-in-law, Shelly (Paul), Jackie; siblings: Coleen (Russell), Neal (Margaurite). 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, Leslie Matthews and many nieces and nephews
