Obituary

St. George, UT - One little spot in Heaven became a brighter place as Ralph entered with his infectious smile, stories, and jokes. Ralph Edwards, 87, passed away at his home in St. George, Utah, on October 4, 2014 with his family surrounding him. Our beloved husband, father and grandfather will be greatly missed. He was born July 2, 1927 in Paragonah, Utah where he grew up. He was the eighth child of Thomas Alexander Edwards and Olive Nichols Barton. He was the last surviving member of his family. He married Cleo Robinson on June 30, 1951. They were sealed in the St. George LDS Temple on September 23, 1954. They were blessed with four loving children: Stephen Ralph (Kathy) Edwards, Karen (Leland) Banks, Cathy Kendrick, and Michael Paul (Lori) Edwards; 14 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. They resided in Paragonah for a time where he was instrumental bringing television into Paragonah. Consequently they owned the first TV in town. They moved to Cedar City in 1959; moved to Farmington, NM in 1981; retired in St. George, UT in 1984. Ralph loved the mountains where he could spend time out in God's creations. Hunting and fishing were his second love next to his family. He joined the U.S. Navy at age 17, and was very proud of his military service. Upon receiving an honorable discharge and returning home he was employed at Utah International Iron Mine, as a laborer, then timekeeper, accountant, buyer, senior buyer and finally purchasing agent. For a time, he worked nights and attended college. He earned an associate's degree from CSU (SUU). He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in all organizations in numerous capacities, including the Bishopric and High Council. He had fond memories of coaching basketball with 12 boys in the Paragonah Ward. He was proud to see ten of them serve missions. Up until he passed away, the "boys" still called him "Coach". The crowning years of his church service, however, was serving in the St. George LDS Temple for nearly 30 years, 24 of those years as a sealer. He also completed a service mission at the family history center. He was a great example to his family and all those who knew him. He truly left a wonderful legacy. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at the St. George LDS East Stake Center, 449 South 300 East, St. George, UT. Visitations will be held Friday, October 10, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd., and on Saturday, at the Stake Center, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., prior to services. Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Paragonah Cemetery, Paragonah, UT. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
