Obituary

St. George, Utah - Raymond Chris Orson Christensen was born April 17, 1921 in Brigham City, Utah to Orson A. Christensen and Rae Noble Christensen. As a child, Raymond enjoyed a rural upbringing, and often shared fond memories of working on his father's sugar farm. His pursuit of a college education took him to Salt Lake City, Utah but was temporarily interrupted by WWII, when he joined the Army. While attending the University of Utah, he met and married Betty Bowen, with whom he had two daughters, Linda and Kathryn. After divorcing Betty and receiving his M.D. from the University of Utah, he moved to Buffalo, NY. While in Buffalo he worked as a pathologist at the Buffalo Children's Hospital. This is also where he met his wife, Cecily Alison Mann, to whom he has been married for fifty-seven years. In 1953, Raymond joined the National Institute of Health. Later, he spent two years in Japan working for the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission. While in Japan, he studied the effects of the atomic bomb on the survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Over the next twenty years, he continued to practice pathology in several cities in the U.S. Raymond initially retired in Orem, Utah where he and Cecily lived for twenty years, prior to moving to St. George, Utah. Raymond and Cecily were sealed in the St. George LDS Temple, and have lived here ever since. In their spare time, Raymond and Cecily enjoyed activities such as camping, hiking, gardening, traveling and learning. One of Raymond's most beloved activities was making candy. He gained tremendous pleasure in sharing this gift. Raymond is survived by his wife, Cecily; his two daughters; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and sisters, Laraine and Mary Rae. He is preceded in death by his brother, Norman. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 3, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sunset LDS 7th Branch Chapel, 415 North Westridge Drive (1450 West), St. George, Utah. A visitation will be held Monday from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Chapel, prior to services. Interment will be at the Tonaquint Cemetery.
