Obituary

ENTERPRISE, UTAH - Reva Helene Atkin Truman, beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, completed her sojourn on earth and returned to her Heavenly Home on Friday, June 29, 2012 from her home in Enterprise, Utah. She left behind, and is dearly missed by, her husband, William James "Billy Jim" Truman of Enterprise, Utah; son, David (Jacque) Truman of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter, Maury Kay (John) Putnam of Bunkerville, Nevada; son, Tracy (Lisha) James Truman of Las Vegas, Nevada; siblings: Kaye Howard, Mary Curtis, and Joe Atkin of St. George, Utah, Bill Atkin of Henderson, Nevada; step-mother, Sara Atkin of Ivins, Utah; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren and counting. Among those awaiting her in the next life are her father and mother; brothers: Maury, Wesley, Mike and Pat; and youngest son, Shawn Edwin.

Helene was born in St. George on November 17, 1933, but she was only 39 years old at the time of her passing; that was the last age to which she ever admitted. She continued to celebrate her birthday after her 39th; she just refused to add any more years. She was the eldest daughter of Wesley Hyrum Atkin and Reva Andrus Atkin.

Helene grew up in St. George, Utah living at times with her grandparents, Hyrum and Eleanor Atkin and A.B. and Rozilla Andrus. She also lived in Nevada and California. She graduated from Dixie High School in 1952.

On September 27, 1952, Helene married her one and only sweetheart, "Billy" Truman of Enterprise, Utah. Their family never tires of hearing the story of Helene's offer to Billy of a piece of chocolate candy for one of his kisses; he accepted, they kissed, and they have continued to kiss for nearly 60 years. They lived in Enterprise, Utah for a few years, during which time David and Maury were born. The family moved to Henderson, Nevada for Billy's new employment opportunity, where their two youngest, Tracy and Shawn, were born. The family moved back to Enterprise in 1968, where they built a house and have lived there ever since. Soon after moving into the new house, the family began attending church more regularly, developing stronger testimonies, and learning about the Plan of Salvation. They were sealed together as an eternal family in the St. George Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 7, 1972.

Helene loved literature and the arts. She collected books and instilled in her children a love of reading and learning, of the theater and of the beauty that is all around us. She was an accomplished seamstress known around the world for the custom-made holiday pillowcases she created and mailed to her missionary grandchildren and their companions wherever they were serving. Helene was one of the original players in the Enterprise Cornfest Melodramas, staged by local townsfolk in the early years of the annual event. She also loved to play "casual" volleyball with the ladies, and much more serious bowling, participating in local bowling leagues in Henderson, Nevada and later in Cedar City, Utah.

One of the great events of Helene's life, and in the lives of her family and friends, was the 18 months she and Billy spent serving in the Nauvoo Restoration Mission in Illinois in 2000-2001. That experience served to strengthen her testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and of the eternal nature of His plan for us. Many of her final words were spoken to her husband and children, reminding us that she loved us "forever."

The family expresses deepest thanks for all of the food, treats, visits, love and prayers offered for Helene and for us during this time. A special thanks to the angels of Southern Utah Home Care and Hospice; you and Helene know who you are.

A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Enterprise LDS Stake Center, 80 South Center Street, Enterprise, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to services, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Stake Center prior. Interment will follow at the Enterprise City Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, 435-673-4221.
