Obituary

Lehi, Utah - Robert Edwin Allen, 94, passed away December 16, 2023.

Robert (Bob) was born March 3, 1929, to Stanley LeRoy Allen and Lillian Swenson Allen in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married Eula Rulene Pendleton on September 2, 1955.

He graduated from East High School (Salt Lake City), received a BFA degree in Music and a BSEE (Electrical Engineering) degree from The University of Utah, and a MSEE (Electrical Engineering degree from the University of California.

At the age of 11 years old, he started taking piano lessons which was the beginning of his love and passion for music. Throughout his youth he took on various summer jobs but always found time to practice the piano. There were summers where he would practice up to 3-4 hours a day.

In 1950, he began his service as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern States Mission.  It was during his mission that he first met his future wife Rulene.  After the conclusion of his mission, Bob and Rulene dated for about a month, but their courtship was cut short when in January 1953 he was drafted into the Army. He spent most of his 2 years of military service in Germany where he also learned to speak German.

He retired in 1989. During his 31 years at Hughes Aircraft Company, he was part of the Engineering technical staff where he designed air-to-air missile components as well as microwave communication systems receiving a patent for one of his designs.

In addition to his work as an Electrical Engineer, he spent his evenings pursuing his original passion for music as a piano teacher.  Oftentimes, he had over 20 piano students, all of which he taught in their own homes. In early weekday evenings, "bullet" Bob could often be seen zipping around the streets of Torrance on his Yamaha 100 motorcycle, going from house to house teaching piano lessons.

He spent a significant portion of his adult life serving the members of Redondo 1st Ward in the Torrance California Stake.  During his time in Torrance he served as Bishop, a Stake Presidency Counselor, as well High Councilor (4 separate times), among a variety of other callings.  He had a broad and profoundly positive influence on many hundreds of church members and is remembered well for his service and wisdom which was rendered with kindness and love (and a lot of good humor).

In 2005, he and Rulene sold their Torrance home and moved Utah where he and Rulene quickly became beloved members of their ward and community in St. George, UT

He is survived by his children, Jeff Allen (Lehi, Utah), Jan Sommer (Robert, deceased) (Lehi, Utah), Jonathan (Judy) (Utah), Jared (Jenny) (Peoria, Arizona), and Jason (Marissa) (Lehi, Utah); 30 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife, Eula Rulene Pendleton Allen, infant son Joseph, and grandsons David Allen and Ryan Allen
