IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert William
Sandberg
September 5, 1950 – June 8, 2025
Washington, Utah – Robert William "Bob" Sandberg 74, passed away, Sunday, June 8, 2025, at his home in Washington, Utah from a terrible disease called Supranuclear Palsy with Progressive Aphasia which he suffered the last 2 years of his life. He was born September 5, 1950, in the old McGregor Hospital in St. George, Utah to William and Erma Bentley Sandberg.
He married Wendy Williams on February 14, 1978. They are the parents of four children: Shelly Sandberg, Swen (Chloe) Sandberg, Sunnie Jarriett, and Sadie (Mitch) Peterson. They have 8 of the best grandkids that ever were: Chev, Grayson, Bentley, Randin, Laylah, Jack, Livy and Brooks.
Bob had a wonderful childhood wandering the white hills along the Millcreek, packing his BB gun, pocketknife and dog. Why did he have to go to school when there was always something to hunt or fish to catch? He attended elementary school in Washington City and graduated from Dixie High School in 1968. He graduated from Dixie College and SUU with a bachelor's degree in Botany and Zoology. He was able to get on board with the Bureau of Land Management, Arizona Strip and work with the best ranchers west of Texas! He knew the land, the cows, every dirt road and every piece of fence out there. He was always checking to see if the storm filled any of the ponds on the allotments he managed. He was genuinely concerned for the rights of the ranchers and getting them what they needed to succeed. The Federal Government sometimes didn't understand Bob's way of thinking and he got very frustrated in dealing with them. Washington County needed someone to fill the position of the Administrator of the Habitat Conservation Plan, Red Cliffs Desert Reserve and Bob was their guy! Bob retired after 33 years at the BLM and worked the next 9 years for the county, mending relationships and bringing peace to the different entities involved there. He was instrumental in the planning of the Confluence Park in Toquerville.
Bob's passion was hunting anything and everything all year long. Putting in for out-of-state hunts as well as everything in Utah! He was the first one to get a hunting proclamation and study it inside and out. He would always remind his family and friends when the due dates were for putting in. Bob was a great hunter and could trace drops of blood and bone fragments for miles and find the wounded animals. He never gave up. Bob and Wendy's home has a deer head in every room except the bathrooms!
He served on the Board of Directors of the Utah Wildlife Federation and also as president of the local chapter. He was awarded the Outstanding Service Award by the Arizona Section of the Society of Range Management. Bob loved serving in the scouting program and received the Silver Beaver Award. He made a difference in the lives of the boys as well as the leaders. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as Bishop, Counselor in Stake Presidency, High Council 3 times and a teacher in many organizations. Bob loved his Savior, Jesus Christ and was close to the Spirit.
Bob's trademarks were his guns, knives, hats, Pepsi, GMC Trucks, dirt roads, George Strait, steak and potatoes, Cherry Pie, Firecrackers, taking Wendy on road trips and being with his family for activities and Sunday Dinner. He was a prepper and a saver. You could always find a two-year-old snickers bar in a coat pocket or an extra pair of brand-new Wranglers in his drawer.
Everyone loves Bob!
He is survived by his wife Wendy who took care of him and didn't leave his side for two years, his wonderful children who filled in when Bob couldn't do it anymore, one brother Shane (Sheila) and his favorite cousins who "lived on down the lane". He is preceded in death by his parents and his best dog, Sandy.
The family would like to express thanks to Zion Way Hospice for their kind and considerate care.
