Obituary

Mesa, AZ - Robert Adams Slack, 74, passed away peacefully at his home in Mesa, Arizona, due to complications from Parkinsons disease on Saturday, August 6, 2011. He was born November 9, 1936, in Cedar City, Utah, to Edgar and Francis Slack. He married Ila Jean Neilsen on September 10, 1965, in the St. George LDS Temple. Bob's greatest loves in life were his family, BYU football and his cabin at Duck Creek, on Cedar Mountain. He often mentioned that his cabin at Duck Creek was the place "closest to heaven". Mr. Slack also served in numerous callings in the LDS church. Some of his callings included serving as a Bishop, High Councilman, Young Men's President and others. He also served a mission to Japan and later was able serve a mission with Ila to England. Mr. Slack taught at Dixie College for nearly 30 years where he was honored as teacher of the year multiple times. He taught thousands of students and was a memorable teacher to all who had the privilege to take a class from him. Former students will remember his quick whit. They will also remember his difficult pop quizzes like "Who's in Grant's tomb?" or "What year did the War of 1812 take place?". Bob spent most of his life in Washington City where he and his family resided for nearly thirty years. He served on the Washington City Council and then two terms as Mayor. In 1988 he was elected to the Utah House of Representatives where he serve two terms in the legislature. Robert was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his children, Ila, his grandson Davie, and by both of his parents. He is survived by his second wife, Karen. He is also survived by his children: Debbie Wallis, Tammy (JP) Leroy, Gary (Anjanette) Slack, Becky (Justin) Nield, Bobbi (Mike) Anderson and Shelley (Wade) Preston. He leaves behind 25 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 11, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Washington LDS 1st Ward Chapel located at 82 North Main, Washington. Visitations will be held Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 300 West St. George Blvd. and on Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel, prior to services. Interment will follow services in the Washington City Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
