Obituary

St. George, Utah - Robert "Bob" Hansen Steed, age 97, passed away on January 26, 2024, in St. George, UT.   He was born to Milton Ezra Steed and Ida Hansen on June 5, 1926, in Syracuse, UT.   Bob married his high school sweetheart, Flora Mae Maughan, in the Salt Lake Temple on June 20, 1947.   Flora passed away on November 16, 2015, after 68 years of marriage.

Bob was raised on a ranch in John's Valley, UT, near Bryce Canyon. At eight years old, he began working in sheep and cow camps where he punched cows, herded sheep, and cooked sourdough biscuits. Additionally, he helped plant, irrigate, and harvest hay and grain crops.

Bob attended schools in Widstoe, UT, Antimony, UT, and Salt Lake City. He graduated from Richfield High School in 1944. At 17, he enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to serve on an aircraft carrier in the southwest Pacific during World War II.

Upon completing his service, Bob graduated from the University of Utah in 1949 with a degree in Geology and was hired by Marathon Oil Company.   He received additional education in executive programs at the University of Indiana and Stanford University.

Bob had a very exciting 33-year petroleum and mineral exploration career that ended when he retired in 1984. His profession allowed him and his family to live in several states. After his retirement, Bob and Flora traveled extensively, experiencing several international cultures. They were particularly fond of the Native American people and their beautiful handmade jewelry and rugs.

Bob is survived by his children: Susan Brady (Neil), Kathryn Davis (Daniel), and Robert W. Steed (Susan); 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Martha Howlett (Duane); brother, Roger Steed (Diane); and many beloved nieces and nephews.
