Obituary

St. George, UT - Robert William Johnston, 75, passed away peacefully surrounded by his daughters and wife in his home June 4, 2010. He was taken from us gradually by the cruel ravages of Parkinson's disease and Dementia. We know he will be restored one day to his perfect form and we will be joyfully reunited. He was born in Westerville, OH on February 26, 1935 to Russell Kirk Johnston and Dorothy Curtiss Hand. He married his high school sweetheart, Winifred Ringelspaugh on June 17, 1957. Married 53 years! Their marriage was later solemnized in the Oakland, CA Temple after they joined the LDS Church. Bob's life was full of accomplishments, challenges and adventures. If he were to write his own life sketch he would want to include: All Ohio high school football, inducted into Covington HS Hall of Fame, graduated from the US Navel Academy class of 1957, served in the guided missile division of the Air Force, earned MBA from Ohio State University, worked for Corning Glassworks and with his father at the Creamery for a short time before he journeyed to Silicon Valley in Palo Alto, CA to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors in several start up semiconductor companies. He fulfilled his dream of taking a company public with Micrel. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1987, but continued to work for several years before early retirement. After he was disabled, he filled his days with fishing excursions to Alaska, Mexico and local ponds and lakes. What we as his family would like to remember is the cheerful man we called "tweety bird". who whistled as he came through the door each night, the man who could fix anything including the car (while wearing his suit), the loyal and devoted husband and father who worked long hours, the dad who would not settle for ABC games on long road trips, but would rather play math and science challenge games, and the kind and generous man who brought people home to live with us when they fell upon hard times. We will miss his keen sense of humor and his contagious giggle. Even in the throws of life altering physical challenges due to PD he was known to joke; like the time his wildly flailing arm smacked a daughter's behind and he smiled and said, "Didn't you get the disclaimer notice? That arm no longer belongs to me!" Bob is survived by his wife; Winnie; children: Connie (Dexter) Irvin, Terri (Paul) Klug, Jennifer Torlos and Magdalene (Edwin) Lamosao; 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; sisters: Barbara (Harold) Marker, Carolyn (Ed) Wolfe, Ruth Dell, Penny Hanes and Patricia Engstrom; brother: Tony (Vickie) Hand; Sister-in-law: Cathy (the late Patrick) Hand. He is preceded in death by parents: Dorothy Hand, Russell and Louise Johnston; son: Kirk William Johnston; and brother: Patrick Hand. A special thanks to the devoted care givers who became part of the family. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sunset LDS Stake Center, 82 North Dixie Dr., St. George, UT. Visitations will be held on Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Stake Center, prior to services. Interment will be at the Tonaquint Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to a Parkinson's Disease research organization of your choice.
