St. George, UT - Rulon H Petty, 95, passed away Monday, July 26, 2010 at Dixie Regional Medical Center. He was born on February 17, 1915 in Talmadge, Utah to George Washington Petty and Zina Eliza Williams Petty. He married Bessie Morley on October 25, 1938 in Gunnison, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti Temple. Bessie passed away in 1982. Rulon married Ilona Lewis Tisdale on June 15, 1985 in the St. George Temple. Rulon was raised in Gunnison, Utah. He had 12 siblings, all who preceded him in death. After high school he joined the Navy. Upon his return home, Rulon moved to Ely, Nevada where he met his first wife, Bessie. They lived in Ely for about five years then moved to Orem where they spent 22 years before moving to St. George. He taught Auto Body and Mechanics at Dixie College. He retired in 1982. One of his favorite jobs after retiring was being a crossing guard on 700 South. He enjoyed the school children and they enjoyed him. Rulon was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many positions over the years, including Young Mens President, 2nd Counselor in the Bishopric, Bishop, and Member of the High Council. He and his second wife, Ilona, were ordinance workers at the St. George Temple and they served a mission together in the Canada Calgary Mission. Rulon also served a mission at the Deseret Industries. Rulon always had a love of cars, his first car being a Model A. He worked many years as an auto mechanic. One of his hobbies was buying wrecked cars and making them look like new again. He also loved traveling and traveled all over the United States, some in Mexico and Canada. Rulon enjoyed people and made everyone feel important and special. He was willing to help anyone anyway he could and never judged anyone. He especially loved his family. Having to miss family members special events, when he could no longer travel was very hard on him. He wanted to be wherever family was. One of his last outings was to a family reunion in Gunnison, Utah. The trip was very hard on him, but he was so glad he went. He is survived by his wife, Ilona, children: Bonnie (Lynn) Vernon, Orem, UT, Carroll (the late David) Johnson, Eagle Mountain, UT, Paula (Mont) Bundy, Diamond Valley, UT, Shaun (Geniece) Petty, Santa Clara, UT, step-children: David (Jan) Tisdale, St. George, UT, Mike (Melody) Tisdale, LaVerkin, UT, Kathy Tisdale, Wendover, NV, Wendy (Mike) Buhler, Santa Clara, UT, Tina (Craig) Laduce, Orderville, UT, John Tisdale, Cameron, WI, Ron (Michelle) Tisdale, Hurricane, UT, and Peggy (Dennis) Clem, Mesquite, NV. Together, Rulon and Ilona have 170 grandchildren, 91 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. We will miss you Dad. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. George LDS 7th Ward Chapel, 449 South 300 East, St. George, Utah. Visitations will be held on Friday, July 30, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd., and on Saturday, from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. at the chapel prior to services.
