Obituary

Ruth (89 1/2 yrs) having lived a long and happy life passed away peacefully early Monday morning, June 22. She was the youngest of four children, born January 6, 1926, the daughter of Charles and Alice Hindle Hill. They all grew to adulthood in the same house her father was raised in: 447 Goshen Street in Salt Lake City. Ruth lived through the Depression, but didn't realize they were poor. She said she had a wonderful family life! Her Daddy worked long hours and Mother would come up with all kinds of interesting games. Ruth was always impressed by the great love her Mother and Dad had for each other. In 1942, a young man named James Orien Clyde moved into the same neighborhood with his sister, Ivie's family. He was from Springville, Utah, looking for a job. Ruth made good friends with Ivie and one day he was washing his car, so Ruth decided to help him. She dashed home, put on her two-piece red and white bathing suit and rushed back. Well, earlier she had been nuts about a guy named, Don. She had her friend tape "DON" on her back. Then she tanned and removed the tape. She tanned really dark. Seeing the name on her back, Orrie thought Ruth was taken. Another day, Orrie was coming back from the store as Ruth was going to the store for her Mother. He tipped his hat and said "Hello" then went on. Ruth ran through the alley, jumped over two fences, and ran to tell Mother that Orrie had spoken to her! She remembered that her Mother had said, "That's nice, but where are the groceries?" Ruth absolutely knew Orrie was for her--even if he didn't know it yet!!! On Ruth's seventeenth birthday (1943), Orrie made arrangements to call Ruth at his sister's home. He was in basic training and when she answered the phone he asked Ruth if she loved him. Ruth said, "Uh huh." He then asked, "Enough to marry me?" Ruth said, "Uh huh." He yelled on the other end of the phone and had her give Ivie the phone so she could make arrangements to get Ruth a ring. That night Ruth had a date with a guy named Bill. As they drove off in his car, she leaned against her door. He asked her if something was wrong. Ruth replied "I think I just got engaged to Orrie Clyde." Bill slammed over to the curb, told her to get out of his car, and then sped off leaving her to walk home in very deep snow-but only a few blocks. One problem arose with her engagement: Edna, Ruth's older sister, was not married yet. Her Daddy was against Ruth marrying before her sister. Luckily for Ruth, Edna did find her one and only and married in June of 1943, thus her Daddy gave his permission. Her Mother, Ivie and son, Bert, accompanied Ruth to San Bernardino, California to meet Orrie. They were married in July 7, 1943, but Orrie had to be back on base early ready to be shipped out. Ruth said, "I slept with Mother on my wedding night!!!" They were later sealed in the Manti LDS Temple on April 10, 1963. Ruth is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her most favorite calling of all she had was Primary Nursery Leader. Many times, she would ask the Bishop if they needed her in that calling as she especially loved the little children. Ruth worked as a wardrobe mistress for many years raising her children. She worked for many of the casino shows (Frontier, Stardust, Dunes, and Tropicana) in Las Vegas. Her favorite was the dancer, Juliet Prowse. She also worked for and was friends with Jimmie Durante, Roy Clark, Robert Goulet, Siegfried and Roy (even being part of their act), plus many other stars. Ruth loved to bake and share her food with everyone: family, friends, Church, stage and wardrobe hands, and stars themselves. She also loved to make stuffed animals and doll them up with leftover jewels from her wardrobe job. Later, she would collect old Barbie dolls and refurbish and dress them. She especially loved making Barbie's with wedding dresses to match her granddaughters' wedding dresses. She loved sewing and made many things for her grandchildren. Ruth is survived by her children: Judy (Bob) Bohne, James (Peggy) Clyde, Frederic (Karen) Clyde, all of Hurricane, UT, and David (Dalanea) Clyde of Wellington, UT; 21 grandchildren, 66 great grandchildren (plus 2 on the way); 1 great-great-grandchild on the way. Preceding Ruth are her husband, James Orien Clyde (1988); siblings: Charles, Edna, and Eugene; granddaughter, Heidi Bohne; great-granddaughters: Audrey Clyde and Abigail Jackman.
