Obituary

Sandy / St. George, Utah - Samuel Lyle Johnson, 93, passed through the veil on February 27, 2010. He was born June 6, 1916 in Orangeville, Utah. Lyle married his sweetheart, Dorothy Whipp Wall, on August 11, 1937 in Washington D.C.; then solemnized their marriage in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on August 18, 1937. Lyle is survived by his son, Van Lyle Johnson of Salt Lake City; his daughters, Charlene Rodgers of St. George,UT, Karma Olivia Johnson of Gilbert, AZ, and Colleen Geach of Woodland, CA; 13 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife. Lyle was raised in a musical home and he was skilled on the violin, french and bass horns. This great man focused his life on family, church and country. As the youngest federal mediator in the country, he opened the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service first in Phoenix, AZ then in Salt Lake City. His was a familiar name in the news as he worked extensively with Kennecott, Wycoff and many other large corporations. Influential in the scouting program, Lyle was a scoutmaster for nine years, also serving as a District Scoutmaster. Lyle held many LDS Church callings, including Elder's Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader, Bishop, High Councilor, Stake Executive Secretary and Stake Young Men's Leader, Temple Worker. Lyle was active in the Republican party, holding many caucus meetings and donating significant financial contributions. When asked by his party to run as the gubernatorial candidate, Lyle declined due to family needs. Lyle was first and foremost a dedicated husband and father. Samuel Lyle Johnson will be remembered with great love and respect by all whose lives he touched. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 5, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 W. St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah. Visitation will be held Friday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary, prior to services. Interment will be at the St. George City Cemetery.
