Obituary

St. George, Utah - Samuel Adair Van Horn, age 93, passed away Monday, July 4, 2011 at the home of his son, Bruce in Bountiful, Utah. He was a kind and humble husband, father, grandfather & great-grandfather. He was born May 9, 1918 in Long Beach, CA to Jesse Adair Van Horn and Bessie Lee McFann. He grew up in Yucaipa, CA and graduated from Redlands High School. He married Hila Levonia Blakeley on May 26, 1938 in Yucaipa. They were baptized as members of the LDS Church in 1960 in Long Beach, CA with sons, Bruce and Wayne and were sealed together in 1962 in the Los Angeles LDS Temple. Sam served in the Army Air Force during WWII in Germany. He was a First Class Machinist and became owner of his own machine shop with Hila working as his only office help (H & S Machine) for over 30 years producing molds for rubber products. He always believed in the values of the Boy Scouts of America by earning the rank of Eagle Scout and serving in his community and Ward as Cubmaster and Scoutmaster for over 20 years. He loved working on Family History where he linked 13,705 ancestors to his pedigree. He was honored to receive a calling at age 90 to serve as a St. George LDS Temple Ordinance Worker. Retired to St. George in 1988, where Sam and Hila designed and built their home in Bloomington Hills. They always remarked how much they enjoyed their neighbors who continually provided acts of loving kindness and service. Sam was preceded in death by his parents; wife Hila; sisters, Kathryn and Evelyn; son, Vance (Carolyn); grandson, Aubrey; and great-granddaughter, Kimberly. He is survived by sons: Bruce (Ann) of Bountiful, UT and Wayne (Kathy) of Payson, AZ.; brother, Paul (Diana) of Lake Forest, CA; and sister, Mildred (Douglas) Craven of Grand Junction, CO. Dad was a proud and loving grandfather of 14 and great-grandfather of 31. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bloomington Hills LDS 3rd Ward Chapel, 1222 Brigham Rd., St. George, Utah. A viewing will be held Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd and Saturday, prior to services from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the chapel. Interment will be at the Montecito Memorial Park in San Bernardino, CA. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
