St. George, UT - Sharmene Welch Brough Burger passed away January 7, 2013 in St. George, Utah at the age of 85. She was born May 22, 1927 in Evanston, Wyoming to Harold E. Brough and Louisa Welch Brough. She graduated from Evanston High School and Brigham Young University. She taught kindergarten and first grade in Tooele, Utah and elementary music in Evanston, Wyoming.
She married John Alan Burger in the Logan Temple August 1, 1952. She was fortunate enough to be a homemaker for the remainder of her life which greatly blesed the lives of her children and grandchildren. John and Sharmene lived in many places throughout the country; New Haven, CT, Salt Lake City, UT, Beloit, WI, Pittsburgh, PA, Grand Junction, CO. They retired to St. George, Utah in 1992.
Sharmene and her husband served a mission at the St. George Visitors Center and historical sites. She was an ordinance worker in the St. George Temple for many years. She also held many positions in the LDS Church; teacher in many organizations, Relief Society President, pianist, organist and chorister. She had a great love for music!
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, husband and eldest son, David. She is survived by six children. Jilene Burger (daughter in law) of Idaho Falls, ID, Wendy and (Herb) Basso of Santa Clara, UT, Sheila and (Thomas) Nitta of Honolulu, HI, Harold and (Devora) Burger of Richardson, TX, Camille and (Mark) Hayward of King George, VA, Amy and (David) Castillo of Folsom, CA, and Scott and (Jill) Burger of Grand Junction, CO. She also leaves behind 21 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way.
Services will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Bloomington Hills 6th Ward LDS Chapel, 750 Fort Pierce Dr., St. George, UT. Visitations will be held on Friday, January 18, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd., and on Saturday, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services at the chapel. Interment will follow at the St. George City Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the LDS Church Perpetual Education Fund.
