Obituary

St. George, Utah – Albin A. and Susie L Bailey Hoglund received their third child and third daughter, Shirley Lorraine, on August 12, 1927, and departed her mortal existence on April, 7, 2024.  In those almost 97 years, Shirley lived a full life.  Shirley attended school in the Los Angeles Unified School District and graduated from Burbank High School.  It was while living in Burbank that while working at FoodMart, she met and fell in love Kenneth H. Bird "Ken".  They dated through high school, but had to put on hold, like so many others, long-term plans with the outbreak of World War II.  Ken enlisted in the U.S. Navy upon graduating from high school and was discharged in July 1946.  They wasted little time and were married by Shirley's father at her parents' home on March 8, 1947.

Their family grew with the additions of Steve (May 1948), Karen (June 1950) and Jim (1953).  They moved often, from one situation to another.  In October 1952 Ken and Shirley with their children were sealed together as a family in the St. George Temple.

Shirley served in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for most of her adult life in the Relief Society, Young Women and Primary organizations on both ward and stake levels.  In 1992, she and Ken accepted a call to serve a mission to the Canada Halifax Mission.  Upon completion of their mission, they relocated to St. George, Utah and continued to serve, many years as temple ordinance workers in the Los Angeles and St. George Temple.

Ken and Shirley were blessed with 10 grandchildren, 28 Great grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

She is survived by children: Steve & Suzanne Bird, Karen & Byon Tolman and Jim Bird; 8 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and 8 great, great grandchildren.

Shirley has been reunited with her husband and best friend, Ken; her parents; sisters: Elaine Vandergrift and Bette Haddock; two grandchildren; and two great grandchildren; as well as all those wonderful ancestors who helped her become who she was.  We as a family have been blessed beyond measure to have in our lives our mom, grandmother, grandma2 and grandma the great.

Shirley often took the road less traveled, and along the way served the hungry, the downtrodden and sometimes forgotten souls.  Shirley's was a life well lived in the service of her Lord Jesus Christ.
