Moore Craig
December 21, 1929 – March 15, 2021
St. George – Shirley Ann Moor Craig, 91, passed away March 15, 2021 due to complications of C.O.P.D which was caused by a lifetime of chronic asthma. She was the only child of Dean and Irene Jones Moore, born December 21, 1929 in Winterset, Iowa. After the death of her mother, she was raised by her paternal aunt and uncle, Robert and Hazel Moore Martin. At the age of six years, she moved to Denver, Colorado with them. She was a graduate of East Denver High School and attended the University of Denver on a scholarship. She married George W. Craig, Jr. on April 8, 1950 in Denver. They were the parents of two children, Amy Ann and Keith George.
Shirley moved to St. George with her husband in 1978 from Taos, New Mexico. She was
Active in church work since the age of 14 and at the time of her death was a member of the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church of St. George. She had been involved in many civic programs in La Junta, Colorado and had served as a volunteer in various capacities of Girl Scouts of America for over 15 years as a troop leader from Brownies through to Senior Girls, Day Camp Director, Columbine Council Board, and Council-wide outdoor training. She was instrumental in obtaining camping facilities at John Martin Dam in southeastern Colorado. For her activities, she received the Girl Scout Statuette for "dedicated service to girls". As part of the Hospital Auxiliary, she organized the "Candy Striper" program at the nursing home in La Junta. She also served on the 1970 White House Conference for Children and Youth for Otero County Colorado and worked in the "Nostros" program for migrant farm workers.
Shirley was a member and charter officer of the Utah Statewide Archaeological Society, Dixie Chapter and the Arizona Archaeology Society. She had completed the Utah Avocational Archaeologist Certification program. She was a member of the Utah Rock Art Research Association, National Pictograph Society and S.N.R.A.A, Las Vegas Chapter. She and her husband did extensive recording of the rock art at the Little Black Mountain Petrograph Site on the Arizona Strip under volunteer agreement with BLM. Shirley and George served as Regional Coordinators for the Arizona Site Steward Program, Arizona Strip West and in 1955 received the "Outstanding Regional Coordinators of the Year" award from the State of Arizona. In August 2000, she joined the Oral History Program through the Dixie State College Library, doing interviews, transcribing, or editing as needed.
Her family always came first, and she loved them dearly. They enjoyed many activities together especially camping and hiking. She enjoyed the out-of-doors and animals, especially her cats. Reading was her favorite hobby and she liked learning anything new and challenging.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, George on October 14, 1996; her son, Keith Craig on October 15, 2011; her daughter, Amy Ann Craig on March 10, 2017; her parents; and Aunt and Uncle.
She is survived by her grandson, Kellan (Kala) Craig; great-grandson, Mason G. Craig; and her daughter-in-law, Susan DuCharme Craig.
Memorial services will be held Friday, March 19, 2021 at 1:00 p.m., with a visitation prior from 12:00 p.m. to 12:45 p.m., at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah.
Private interment was held in the St. George City Cemetery by the side of her husband and daughter.
