IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Shirley Ann
Spriggs Johnston
July 24, 1941 – April 30, 2025
Shirley Ann Spriggs Johnston, age 83, of St. George, Utah, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2025. Born on July 24, 1941, in Parsons, Kansas, Shirley lived a life marked by warmth, kindness, and quiet strength. She was a devoted, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, whose generous spirit and nurturing heart touched everyone who knew her.
Shirley married the love of her life, Francis "John" Johnston, on June 10, 1961, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in South Mound, Kansas. Together, they shared 55 years before his passing in 2016.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Foster; her son, Kenneth Johnston; her two granddaughters: Amanda Derfler and Stephanine Johnston Boren; four cherished great-grandchildren; and her brother, Steven Spriggs. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John; her parents, Kenneth and Rosene Spriggs; and her brother Ronald Spriggs.
Shirley had a gentle, loving nature and expressed her care through thoughtful acts – especially food. Whether baking her family's favorite dishes or ensuring even the neighborhood hummingbirds were well fed, she found joy in nurturing others.
She found pleasure in the simple things: reading, word search puzzles, baking and especially Sunday afternoon drives. She loved animals, with a soft spot for anything "baby" and a lifelong affection for horses. She often shared fond memories of her grandfather teaching her to ride a horse before she could even walk – a story she proudly told.
In addition to caring for her family, Shirley gave many hours of volunteer work at the local hospital, where her compassion and warmth made a lasting impact.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 23, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the St. George Catholic Church located at 259 West 200 North. Her final resting place will be at South Mound Cemetery in South Mound, Kansas, next to her beloved husband.
