IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Shirley "Joanne"
Williams
August 2, 1932 – December 17, 2022
St. George, Utah – Joanne passed away peacefully on December 17 at the age of 90, at the Snow Canyon Beehive home in St. George, Utah. She was surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born on August 2, 1932, in Miamisburg, Ohio, to Katherine Irene (St. John) Maginnis and Robert Franklin Maginnis. She was their only child. Her father passed away when she was only five years old. She grew up in Miamisburg, Ohio. She had a happy childhood playing with her cousins and her dog in the apple orchard across the street from her home. She spent each summer with her father's parents. Her mother remarried when she was 12 years old to Loraine "Booty" Ammerman, they moved to Dayton, Ohio.
She attended Oakwood High School in Dayton, Ohio, where she had many friends and participated in many school activities. She learned Latin and French. She played women's field hockey. After graduating in 1950, she won a sports scholarship to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She joined a sorority, Alpha Sigma Alpha. She met and fell in love with her husband, Nelson Noel Williams, from New Carlisle, Ohio. They were married on May 10th, 1952, at her family's church the St. John's Lutheran Church in Dayton, Ohio.
Nelson was sent to France during the Korean War. In 1952, she sailed on the Queen Mary to meet my father who was stationed with the Army in LaRochelle, France. They lived in France for almost two years. They traveled to Rome, Versailles, Lourdes, Naples, Florence, and were in England to view the procession on the street for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
In 1962, they moved their family to Las Vegas Nevada where Nelson worked as a professor at UNLV. At that time, they had three children, and Nelson's mother Charlotte Williams moved with them. About 1964 Nelson and Joanne joined the LDS Church. They had four more children. She was active in the Church, conservative politics, environmental issues, wildlife and wilderness conservation. About 1977, the family moved to St. George, Utah, they felt they needed to be close to the temple. They moved to Ivins in 1980, where they lived for many years, then retiring to Santa Clara.
Joanne was very sweet, stubborn in her ideals, moral, spiritual, and a patriot. She enjoyed life, the beauty of the outdoors, and loved children. Family was most important to her. She had done much research on her family history, which she has passed down. She completed work in the temple to be married to Nelson for time and all eternity. He was the love of her life, they endured life's struggles, and were dedicated to each other for life. She loved classical music, nature, preparedness, and herbal medicine. She was adventurous, gracious, loving and friendly to everyone.
Joanne and Nelson were married for fifty-three years, they had seven children, twenty-one grand-children, and eighteen great-grandchildren. Her children are Loraine, Kathleen, Nelson, Andrea, Wende, Barbara, and Richard.
