Obituary

Sonja Joan Hall Bryce passed away peacefully on June 25, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by the love of her family, with her husband by her side.

Born on July 21, 1949, in Springerville, Arizona, to Chellis Leslie Hall and Frances Elizabeth Martin, Joan—known throughout her life as Joan or "Joanie" to many—was remembered for her joyful spirit, warm heart, and unwavering faith.

As a child, Joan underwent surgery for severe scoliosis, a challenge that caused lifelong pain but never diminished her optimism or determination. In high school, her warmth and enthusiasm made her a natural leader. She served in several class offices, was selected as a Girls State delegate, and finished her senior year as Head Varsity Cheerleader. Her kindness, enthusiasm, and natural ability to connect with others marked her life as a beloved daughter, sister, friend, and later, wife, mother, grandmother, and Church leader.

A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Joan devoted her life to serving her Heavenly Father and those around her. Whether working with the youth, teaching, serving in Relief Society and Primary, or quietly ministering one-on-one, she led with compassion, humility, and love.

While attending Arizona State University, she met the love of her life, Ron Bryce, and they were married in the Mesa Arizona Temple on June 10, 1971. She taught kindergarten for two years before becoming a mother, a role that would become her life's greatest joy. Together they raised four children while building a home filled with faith, laughter, resilience, and love.

Their family was blessed to live in Arizona, Venezuela, Spain, Florida, and eventually Utah, where they formed treasured friendships that lasted a lifetime. Joan embraced every new chapter with faith and optimism. While living in Spain, she accepted a calling as Primary President despite speaking only limited Spanish. She often said she could only have fulfilled that calling through the help of the Holy Ghost, and it became one of the defining experiences of her life.

One of the deepest sorrows of Joan's life came with the tragic loss of their young son, Todd, in 1982. Through that unimaginable loss, the love of family, dear friends, and fellow members of the Church helped sustain them. Those friendships became lifelong blessings and strengthened Joan's testimony that the Lord carries us through our darkest days.

Joan found her greatest joy in her family. She loved serving them, cooking together, playing games, laughing often, and making every gathering feel special. Her children and grandchildren knew they were deeply loved, and countless friends experienced that same love through her kindness, generosity, and genuine interest in their lives.

Joan's life was a beautiful example of quiet faith, steadfast service, and Christlike love. She believed that families are eternal and looked forward with hope to the joyful reunion that awaits. Until then, her example will continue to bless all who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed until we meet again.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Chellis and Frances Hall; her son, Todd Martin Bryce; her brother, Bryan Martin Hall; her sister, Loretta Stamm; and her brothers-in-law, Richard Lantz and Terry Stamm.

She is survived by her husband, Ron Bryce; her children, Derek (Brooke), Kacy (Sean) Madigan, and Mark (Diana); her six beloved grandchildren, Ryan, Annie, Mason, Jackson and Llewyn Bryce and Daemien Mendoza; and her siblings, Chelisa Lantz, Deb (Ron) Goodman, and Brad (Debbie) Hall.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dixie Home Hospice and the physicians, nurses, and caregivers at the Cancer Center of St. George Regional Hospital for the compassionate care they provided during Joan's battle.
