Obituary

St. George, Utah - Spencer Wesley Truman, age 101, died April 7, 2023, at the Seasons Health and Rehab in St. George.  He was born February 14, 1922, in St. George, Utah to Albert Henry Truman and Ruth Foremaster Truman.  He married Herma Gubler on November 3, 1942, in St. George, Utah.

Spencer grew up in St. George and its surrounding areas, spending time on family ranches.  He went to school in St. George, graduating from Woodward School in 1940.  While in school he joined the National Guard and at the outbreak of World War II joined the U.S. Army.  Spencer and Herma were married while he was on leave from basic training before leaving for Officers Training in New England.  Herma stayed with him until he was sent overseas to Europe.  During his service in Europe, his first child was born.  He would not see this baby until he returned home from the war, nearly 3 years later.

Spencer then moved to Southern California where Herma had gone with her family.  They lived there until 1978 when they returned to Southern Utah.  During the years in California, two more children were born.

Spencer's entire working career was spent in the trucking business with his father-in-law, Clement Gubler, in Los Angeles, California.  After retirement, he and Herma moved to Kanarraville, Utah where they had built a new home.  After 4 years, they decided "Dixie" was their real home.  They lived in the Middleton area until 2014, just prior to Herma's death.

Spencer and Herma had a cabin in Pinto for many years, and thoroughly enjoyed going there in the summertime where it was a bit cooler.

Spencer and Herma served an 18-month LDS Mission to Seoul, Korea in 1985.  They then served as ordinance workers in the St. George Temple.  Spencer served for 20 years, wanting to follow in the footsteps of his grandmother, Sarah Ida Foremaster, who had been matron in the Temple, and served for 20 years. Spencer was an active member of the American Legion for over 40 years, holding many positions.  He loved being of service whether for his country, his community, his family or his church.

Spencer is survived by his three children:  Jeanine (Gary) Vander Bruggen, St. George, Utah; Phillip (Lucinda Bowler) Truman, Las Vegas, Nevada; Mark (Luanne Tolbert) Truman, St. George, Utah.  He has 11 surviving grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-great-grandchildren; and 1 sister, Helen Davis (Caliente, Nevada).

Spencer is preceded in death by his wife, Herma Gubler Truman; his parents; grandson, Spencer Wesley Truman; brothers: Alma and Donald Truman; and sisters: Wanda Truman, Barbara Price, and Ellen Green.

A visitation will be held on Monday, April 17, 2023, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd. followed by a graveside service at 10:00 a.m. at the St. George Cemetery, 600 East Tabernacle Street.
